Hello all! I'm Sandy. I'm here every day checking out the beautiful jewelry you all have come up with. I'm wanting to learn, but due to work and budget, I have to just learn as I go.

My request is this: Would you be interested in posting a few WIPs, maybe even a post or two with definitions, for those of us who are just learning? Maybe some wire work? Stringing? Where do you get your inspirations? Also, where do you buy your supplies? Online? A local bead store? From other WC'ers?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice and ideas. You all are great!

Sandy, It might help to know what area you are in for finding stores, unless you are talking about online stores. I will get back to you on threads for WIPs.

Sandy, join Beading Daily to get their daily newsletter. A lot of it is advertising, but once or twice a month, they have brief free downloads of "how to's" for a particular piece and the photographs of how to assemble the piece are very good. Today, for example, they have a nice tutorial on chain mail for making a necklace. http://www.beadingdaily.com/ They also have a lot of free projects here: http://www.beadingdaily.com/freeprojects/projects.aspx I think you could learn a lot about technique from these.

Also, don't forget your local library; I bet they have some books on jewelry making that would give you a jump-start. If your local library doesn't have much, ask if they can get interlibrary loans from other libraries.

Hi Sandy, have you looked in the sticky thread for Jewelry and Fiber Arts Links? There's loads of info there which might help you.

Sandy, I'd recommend you start with the excellent tutorials at About.com... they did me a lot of good when I was just starting out and they're already set up!

Rita, well actually I have a once in a lifetime opportunity. My son and brother went in together and bought out an entire art and hobby craft store, including fixtures. There are literally thousands of dollars worth of beads - everything from cheap plastic beads to nice semi-precious stones. And... I get my pic of anything I want. For what they don't have, there is a bead store just a couple of blocks from where I work, but I'm having a really hard time figuring out where to start. It's a bit overwhelming. I'm thinking wirework right now. I appreciate you looking for the WIPs for me. I've not really seen any, except for one that I can think of.

Rose, I have joined Beading Daily and I receive their newsletter. I'm thinking about buying the book they sent an email out about today about wire jewelry. Yes, my library is a goldmine and they do have interlibrary loaning. My only problem there is time, but I suppose it's the problem with most people.

Thank you guys for your input. Greatly appreciated.

Sandy, also do you have a book store in your area, they have magazines like "Step by Step Wire Jewelry" and it goes step by step with the pictures and you can learn quite easily by looking at them. I have made some wonderful things from that magazine. Hope that helps.

Hi Sandy & welcome to WC!!! Beading daily is a wonderful tool as is this forum. The ladies who post here are so nice and helpful. In todays Beading daily email, the instructions for my Japenese 2 by 2 chainmaille bracelet that was published in the Spring 2007 issue of Step by Step Wire magazine can be purchased for $4.00. I would suggest viewing & reading some of the Show & Tells in this forum for ideas. We have very talented women here.
