would it be ok to work with only schmincke's and hard pastels? I am not to sure if this would be too difficult.

Hello, oh yes, you can work with Schmincke's and hard pastels, if the hard pastels you mention are indeed soft or dry pastels that are hard. As Sch is so hypersoft, they work fine if you have a light hand, and they are excellent for a painterly look.
There are pastellists who work with Sch's only.
I use Rembrandt's first, and they are fairly hard, and then Sch's on top of them.

I use Schminckes for the icing on the cake only with harder pastels under them.

Any pastel can successfully be used alone or in combination with harder pastels. The key I think with the softest pastels is to use a light hand and heavily textured or better yet sanded paper. Put the harder pastels down first and then layer away with the softest pastels, but do so lightly.

I was considering using UART 800 with schmincke's and hard pastels for a portrait.
