So I am just wondering how many Fusers and Slumpers are there out there? Can you show us some of your work? I find it really interesting! I really like some of the work I have seen in the past.

I fuse a bit. Let's just say my fused pieces look a lot better than my beads. However, I got my new minor today so I am very excited. I am going to try to load a pix for you guys to see.

Hi Laura! I do a lot of fusing and slumping.... I love to do plates and bowls and such. My goal is to get a big enough kiln to make sinks in.... I love glass sinks!

I am hopefully attaching a picture of an ashtray I did at xmas as a commissioned piece.... and hopefully tomorrow I can take a photo of a plate that I have cooling in the kiln right now. I am partial to doing mosaic like pieces..... this ashtray is all dichro that has been topped with clear and then slumped into the ashtray. The piece that is cooling is an 8" x 8" square plate that is all transparent glass over a piece of clear and black frit and stringer glass....then after eache transparent piece was glued to place, I took red fine frit and filled in the gaps....sort of like grout. It is soooo cool. Hopefully it will come out of the kiln okay....

Take care!

Leslie

I will tell you what it means to me but, first you must critique it for me...what emotion does it bring forth for you Richard?:D

macbeads, welcome to wetcanvas! I love that piece, is it a cab or does it have a hole for stringing?

Leslie, I love your ash tray and I can't wait to see your plate...and sinks when you start doing them. How cool!!!

well......I bought a kiln big enough for me to fuse & slump in addition to annealing beads.

Have oodles of bullseye fusing glass in the basement (ok, maybe not oodles, but enough for me to get started with)....

Even have kiln wash on the shelf (been dry about 3 wks).

Have Gil Reynolds book.

So - why, oh why am I scared to get started? We've had a month of extreme heat here - way to hot to fire the kiln. Ok, that's one excuse...

I spend time looking at glass websites for molds to slump with. I guess I just don't know what I want to make.

Leslie or Macbeads - any advise you can give????? What's the best for a brand new newbie to start with (project wise)?

Miss Kate :o

Hey Mac! Didn't know you fused!? CONfused, maybe...:D I really like that piece.

And Leslie - I always think your work is beautiful. I really would like to get into fusing & slumping - well, at least the "good" kind of slumping...

Harold - you ask what your "piece" brings forth? Well, maybe not emotion, but it brings "forth" something... Just teasing - Richard missed a PERFECT opening there to comment on bringing forth his last meal... OK, gross...sorry.

I have always thought that the perfect beginning project for fusing is either cabs (if you are a jewelry person), coasters, or tiles. There is just fusing there....no slumping. Then when the slumping bug bites (and it will)... try a plate or a bowl.... or go for a floral former and do a candle holder or vase (if your kiln is tall enough).... It really isn't that hard... there is just more to the heating and annealing cycles.... the bigger the piece, the slower you fire and the longer you anneal. But get some of the books that have been mentioned... and go to the Warmglass site, and you will be in slumping heaven before you know it!

Laura You are way too funny I love Red Skelton, I wish I had a poster of him in my computer room, as a child he made me crack up.

Anyway to get back to the topic at hand, I teach an intro to fusing,,,, I have a class starting in august and a fuse workshop for the holidays, also classes are casual and fun just try not to get into the tech stuff too much with my students they make a few trivets and a cab or 2 and if the bug bites them in the butt (which it always does) I make sure they get a few good books on fusing, and I also send them on over to the warm glass web site.

Your ashtray is spectacular...when I first noticed...I thought it was a quilt. I wonder...how do you cut each piece of dichro so precise? I've tried using a glass cutter but with small pieces...they seem to break in unwanted shapes.
