A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Magnificent Masters SND
Project Leader: Wingnut
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Studying the masters of the art world is a great way to learn about technique, style, and a zillion other things! Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to find a famous painting/drawing/sculpture (whatever) and create your own version of it. You do NOT have to copy it exactly! (but you can if you want) You are more than welcome to show us your own version, or perhaps even show us what the original would have looked like had YOU done it first! Just please let us know what the original title or who the artist was. You do not have to use the reference photos, you are welcome to go find your own!

This project will be always open, so enter anytime!

Have fun!

(sorry its so late)

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=250)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

In response to your email, just wanted to let you know this sounds like a very constructive project. I think it would be fun to interpret something done by one of the Old Masters. I'll have to be sure to look at the posted results!

Inkskin, I actually can't decide which of your two I like the best. They're both so well done, is that charcoal? Although Gabriel seems more finished than the Death of the Blessed, I believe I'm leaning towards the latter. I love the softness of the blended areas contrasting with the sharp lines.

Really a pleasure to see your work here! Well done!

Wingnut, what a wonderful drawing you've done. You chose a detailed and difficult subject and mastered it! You mastered the master!

By the way, what a great idea for a project! I've never tried to reproduce any of the masters, and yet isn't that what droves of artists travel to art galleries every year to do? Great idea, I loved looking for an image and trying my hand at it. Thanks so much!

It was a lot of fun trying my hand at reproducing one of my fav. artists work, anyway.

Oil Pastels on textured Strathmore recycled paper. Size 8x10" Since I haven't obtained the ability to do decent full faces yet, I thought I'd take a portion of my favorite Renoir (Two Sisters or also known as On the Terrace) and do it my way. Had a lot of fun doing this. Thanks Wingnut for the opportunity to imitate the Masters.

Here's the ref pic I used with the area I painted outlined in a white box. oh and I think it took about 2 1/2 hours. I kind of got lost in it and didn't look at the time when I started tonight.

Hi Wingnut,
Yeah, I guess it is a little creepy. That's the cool thing about drawing sculptures, they look kind of like ghosts when they are drawn.

Don't you just love all of the "written in stone" rules about art, most of which get routinely ignored. My standard reply to similar statements is "I leave the copying to the machines. I interpret what I see." Besides, a lot of the stuff that the old masters used has been found to be hazardous to your health!

Hi inkskin,

Thanks for asking. I tried to post the medium, but, the project uploader wouldn't let me.

This is pastel on grey canson. Of course the original was oils. I cropped the head from the original and just did the portion.

I would love to tell you which greens I used but it would be very difficult to. When I paint I dont really look at the names of colours, I just pick one up, trying to take into account its value and paint away. But from memory, I used an almost black green to block in the shapes of the trees and then I used a small number 4 filbert brush to soften the blocking in and overlaid it with an olive green and lastly for the highlights I chose a green that wouldnt jump out too much. Sorry for the vagueness of my description but I really didnt and dont take much notice of colour names, and seeing as I am using pastels, they are usually laid out infront of me (in a mess I might add).

This is my study in pastels of Van Gogh's oil Absinthe Glass with Carafe. I'm learning so much about this complicated artist, especially that his work is much more complicated and deliberate than it looks. I'm really enjoying this project.

This is absolutely beautiful. Your work on the glass is extraordinary...visually stunning to say the least.

Cheryl:clap:

Wish I could take a bow, Cheryl, but this is the original Van Gogh. This is the image in the Progress Gallery, beneath which are my comments :

"Title: Absinthe Glass with Carafe by Vincent Van Gogh
Added: 09-16-2002
Comments: This is the original upon which my study is based."

My copy is in the Final Gallery and isn't nearly as wonderful. But I'd love to hear your comments on it. Thanks. :)

Sorry about making a mistake on the initial comment, but I still think you did an awesome work of art. The glass work is very well done as is the rest of the painting. I love the colors you used in yours. It gives it an added flavor...Cheryl:clap:

Thank you so much, Cheryl, for your lovely comments on my effort. But it is I who should perhaps apologize. I posted the original in the progress gallery because this is not a well-known painting of van gogh--from his early years in Paris. But I love the painting, so I thought I try it and provided the original for comparison.

This is magnificent! At first I thought it was a sculpture. You really caught it.

Thanks Eileen. I'm so happy to have got that effect on my drawing....:)

I love your version because of the different perspective it adds, an older child and because of your shading technique. Very well Done. I'm working with a man right now on Deviant Art who's sketchwork is so life-like one would think it's a photo that you are looking at. He's been giving me some instruction, but one thing he said to me was that I should always remain true to who I am as an artist. In other words, it wasn't in my best interests to become him. I think you have a wonderful style of shading and detail in your sketch. Be true to who you are always...never be satisfied (not discontentment) with where you are because that will spur you on towards growth as an artist.

I also wanted to thank you for your comments on my work. I always appreciate it when people take the time to view and comment...Cheryl :D

Nice work everyone!
I thought I would extend the life of this project and add one of my sculptures! (I saw the Mona Lisa on the main project page and thought that my sculpture found a home!;) I have another artwork (painting) that I will add later. I need to take a picture of it.) Laura

This is way late, I'm sure not getting any points for promptness on this one.

I'd been thinking about doing my own rendition of this one for a while, and actually started it around the time I signed up for this project. Then I put it away.. for a while. A long while.

But it's done now.. and, well.. here it is.

Thanks Gnu and Linarty, I like this alot too. this happens to be one of my favourite paintings by Van Gogh (Yes, I love his work!).

hmm... I enjoyed doing this so much I might.. do it again. I'd like to play with the clouds and air a bit more, work the swirls with a bit more detail this time.

This is really great!!! I am a big fan of Van Gogh and love to copy his work. I looked at what you did and thought "I wish I had thought of that!!" A really great piece of artwork!! I keep going back and looking at what you did again and again!! :D Kim
