Is it illegal to copy part of a photograph by

photographers are very organized and professional. i would think they copyright everything they do. don't take the chance, unless you use stock material.

I don't think it's illegal to use a photo if you change it up..Just as it's not playgerism if you don't copy an article word for word.
I guess you're aware of the concern about how relying too much on a photo can flatten your work. If not, try drawing or painting the same scene from a photo and also from life and see the difference for yourself..
