View Full Version : Dog and Cat Pix Needed!
08-04-2008, 01:52 PM
Hey gang, I'm starting a class in September that will be all about painting dogs and cats. I don't have any animals anymore, so I'm on a hunt for some good photographs to use for my class demonstrations througout the eight weeks. If you have a good picture and you don't mind me painting it I'd love to see it!
I want photos with natural lighting, since the first thing I'm cautioning my students NOT to do is to use that burned out flash photo where the eyes glow weirdly and there's an odd sheen to the animal's fur. Not natural enough for me... so I'm looking for pix shot outside or in natural availalble room lighting, first of all. Then I need some shots that show features well, such as a close up of the eyes, nose, lips, teeth, tongue, ears, paws, tail, etc. (both dog and cat.) I'd also love to have shots that are head-on, not shot looking downward but face-to-face. I won't rule any possibilities out, however, so if you have something you want to show me, I'd appreciate seeing it.
I also want to remind our newbies that when we post a photo in a thread it isn't availalble to everyone to copy and use for a pianting, only by permission. If you have a photo that anyone can copy and use, just say so in the thread, but if not that's okay. I'd also like to know if I can use share it with my students. I like to provide good photos as references for them to use in classs. So just let me know what's kosher!
Thanks gang...I can't wait to get started practicing again. I love doing bright, colorful, expressive animals, which is what I plan to teach. :wink2: You can check out the animals on my web page to see what I do.

Hi Deborah, good luck with your class. I am going to be taking photos at a dog show in a couple of weeks. Apart from maybe getting a commission or two it is my intention to gather the same sort of refs you are talking about. I am so often presented with blurred shapes the size of postage stamps and expected to produce detailed portraits from them so I hope this will be chance to fill in some gaps. PM me for a CD full to play with

Here's some Deborah, if you can use them. I know you said no downward poses, but I love the look on Nick's face in this shot.
This is Mia my mini schnauzer...
And this Caera, my skye terrier ..

Here's one of my buddy. This is Smokey, affectionately called "Mokey". He's 14 and still plays like a kitten. You're welcome to use his pic if you like, and I would love to see how the pieces turn out.

Well I might as well jump on the bandwagon here.
Here is a picture of my smug cat, Thor known as Thorable.
This is my other not so smug cat below, Athena aka Princess.

Here are my dogs Bonnie and Monty, please feel free to use these photos if you would like too.
08-05-2008, 09:52 AM
This is so generous of everyone and what a blast to see all the animals. I promise that once I start the class (assuming we get enough enrollment that it goes) I'll be more than happy to start a thread with the pix of the demos in it. Your photos have helped so much already. I need to write the class schedule and seeing them has sparked a lot of thoughts, such as backgrounds, the dos and don'ts of photography, how a different perspective changes what you see and how you feel about an animal--and how color can, well, color your emotional response to them, too.
Thank you, one and all!!

I am just loving this thread, thanks Deborah! What great pets everyone has, loved the Border Collie with the peephole!
So here are some of my dogs, Molly and Karl. I do not know if they are useful to paint but anyone is welcome to use them if you think they are.
Molly is always where the kids and food are, spillage is her favorite word!
08-06-2008, 07:30 PM
Not sure if this will work as it's been ages since I uploaded anything. I could get a shot of his paws as well if you are interested. He's a Hemingway cat (six toes)
08-06-2008, 08:07 PM
LOL, that pic is priceless, Michael! Fun thread, I enjoyed seeing all the pets - and here's a couple from me as well. I have larger versions too if you need.
This is Lucas:
08-07-2008, 02:30 AM
Here are a few - I'll have to hunt down some other ones too. I thought I'd post these because it looks like the dogs are winning, and the cats should rule because its their world, and we just live in it.
I'm throwing this one in just because it's pretty cute -
08-07-2008, 07:26 PM
Here are a couple of my baby (only 10yrs) lol
08-07-2008, 11:33 PM
Ok here you go hope you like them  These are a few of my pets, my photos, so if you like them have fun.
08-08-2008, 12:11 AM
I need some good close ups of tails! Furry, fuzzy, flouncy--anything... (Um, not really looking for detail shots of the south end of a northbound animal...we already have that from Sonni! Well, if it comes with the territory, fine...)
I could also use a few pix of ears from the back, not just head-on, or any close-ups of ears. Floppy, perky, smooth or curly.
And paws! Big, small, delicate or muscled--fat feet or fine feet! I want to see the pads, especially, and can anyone get a cat to put its claws out? If any of you can coax your feline or canine friends into posing, I'd appreciate it! "Up with your paws, Fido (or Fluffy.)"
08-08-2008, 08:12 PM
I have lots of dogs and cats (you don't want to know....)....BUT....it has been 100-105 deg. F here....and they have ALL been inside most of the time lately....I keep meaning to kick them outside to take pics...and even did that a few times...but they just head under the deck or someplace cool...FAST...but will keep trying
08-09-2008, 04:23 PM
some close-ups. Dozer is the only one who will sit still, and after awhile, he gets a really pissed off look when he's being bothered.
pads and tail
face and legs
claws, feet, tail and ears
pads and tongue
08-09-2008, 04:25 PM
Well, the lab and lab/dane mix are really tough to catch when they are NOT in my face and being very active....much better luck with the basset...the last one- is who was eating the cat food from the deck...still not a cat in sight- outdoors that is... our cutest 2 cats have no tails... if Cookie wanders up today though he is very beautiful and fluffy....
off to kitty hunt....
08-09-2008, 05:13 PM
still no cats outside....I will dig on my hard drive...
08-09-2008, 05:48 PM
Here's the back of Angel's ears.
08-09-2008, 06:22 PM
Linda...the black and white cat walking with the tail up? Could I use it as a photo ref? Thanks
08-09-2008, 06:46 PM
Sonni- of course you may use any of these that you like....
08-09-2008, 07:35 PM
sorry- these were indoors....
even more sorry...on my dining table...
ok- so not what you are looking for....
08-09-2008, 08:09 PM
indoor kitten and kitty dinner....
08-10-2008, 01:44 AM
Thanks. How MANY cats do you have, anyway??? I love the rear view of the orange and white tabby. I may do a series of cats in multi-colors from your photos since I'm such a sucker for these animals.
08-10-2008, 10:26 AM

08-12-2008, 12:42 AM

08-12-2008, 05:03 PM
I've been trying to upload an image I used for a drawing event but it won't co-operate. It's my kitten, Lizzie, with different-colored eyes, post # 6 of this thread:

Hey, does anyone have any puppy pictures? I only have one kitten pic, so I'd love to get more of those, too, but no real pups! I'd sure appreciate the help, if you have anything... Thanks!
09-15-2008, 12:56 PM
I just got a new siamese kitten so I'll be happy to share some pics of her. I think I got some good ones yesterday and as soon as I go through them I'll post them.

And a few more, 6 months old...
I have these in larger versions too if you need it.
01-26-2009, 01:19 PM
I'm bumping this back up to the top because on Thursday my class and I are going to paint cat faces, and I wondered if any of you had any more shots to share. Remember, I need a photo thatís very specific:
one taken in natural sunlight (not with a flash)
at eye level to the animal
close up to face
not overly foreshortened by the camera
Thanks! I'll share what I paint...
01-26-2009, 03:45 PM
Here are the few cats I have that might be of interest.
01-26-2009, 05:04 PM
Thanks, Carolyn! :) Do you mind if my students use any of these for practice?
01-26-2009, 05:47 PM
Deborah, When I get home I'll post a nice closeup of our big boy Alex (kitty). He's so handsome!
01-26-2009, 06:32 PM
I don't mind a bit that your students use them. The 1st two are my cat, Prissy and I took the other photo at a campground last summer. I don't paint many cats.
01-26-2009, 08:30 PM
01-26-2009, 10:39 PM
Ok, here's my boy Alex...King of the House!
01-26-2009, 11:40 PM
Hail to the king! Nice pic.. Thanks!
01-28-2009, 12:06 AM
Mine are indoor cats, so I don't have many without flash. Here are a few of Memphis.
01-28-2009, 01:50 PM
Thanks Bonnie--wow, love that dense black with blue and red-violet highlights. Yum.
01-29-2009, 01:26 AM
Thanks, Deborah. I have four black cats and Memphis is the most red. He glows.
I've been having trouble uploading. Will try again later.
