It's darned hard to follow in Cyndi's footsteps figuring out a challenge for the forum, but I've decided on a theme:
Rust Never Sleeps!

You've got lots of options. You can do something around a rusted piece of metal or paper. If you don't have anything rusted, you can go ahead and do the rusting yourself: http://www.hgtv.com/crafting/rust-art-book-cover/index.html or http://www.finishing.com/389/04.shtml or http://www.primitivecountrycrafts.net/rusting%20recipe.html Note: please use care with these materials! Always read the instructions carefully, work outside or with plenty of ventilation, wear protective clothing, etc.

You can use craft "rusting" materials to apply rust to a non-metallic surface (http://www.amstamps.com/distressed/rust.html or http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=cp0235).

Fake rust: Spray or brush on shellac - then apply liberal amounts of cocoa - repeat layers as desired - it looks quite realistic. An optional layer of matte finish "Clear Coat" will encapsulate it for durability. (from http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2006/07/how_to_make_steel_rust_quickly.html)

Now, take that rusted stuff and make a "found-object" piece! Recycle things already in your studio or garage, or go dumpster diving (really, you can do this...). Think "assemblage." Think Louise Nevelson, Joseph Cornell, Edward Kienholz, Keith LoBue (http://www.lobue-art.com/), Daniel Spoerri (http://www.kunsthauswien.com/english/austellungen/spoerri.php), etc.

Remember, "Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making something out of it after it is found" (James Russell Lowell)

I look forward to seeing your rusted creations!

I experimented with rust paint and oxidizer on a slick glass make up bottle. I put the chips of lipstick at the bottom of tubes in here & use it as lip gloss so I wanted a pretty bottle. The main problem is the paint flaking off as the glass is too smooth. I think I should have etched the glass bottle first before adding the paint.

Oh well. Much experimenting gone bad, more to experiment on!

Rose Queen

Well, experimenting is half the fun, right, Barb? Would it help the flaking if you put a matte clear spray over it?

Well, whatever, I still think it came out lovely!

I think I need a medium made for glass as the glass is very smooth. But if I can find a way to do this correctly the possibilities for pretty little bottles with embellishments are endless.

I am as you can see a bower bird of sorts, I hated throwing away the left over lipstick at the end of the stick so found a way to use it. I have not had to buy makeup for years. Perhaps it shows more than I think
:crying:

I had better get to sleep, work tomorrow. Hub is snoring and woke me up (pls don't tell him)!!!

I am going to try this one. I have some rust a friend of mine gave me about 6 years ago. Its rust off an old car. Now, I have to find out where I put it. ;)

Here's another possible solution. The rubber stamp/scrapbooking industry has come up with a ton of products for embellishing paper arts. If you're not a rubber stamper/scrapbooker, maybe you have a friend who is and could help you with this:

1. Coat glass with clear embossing ink or any other pigment stamp pad ink of a color that won't clash with rust

2. Roll in ultra-thick embossing enamel (UTEE, for short) or any clear embossing powder and melt with heat gun

3. While still hot, sprinkle with Judikins Embossing Powder in one of its metal finish colors (Weathered Vane, Weathered Iron, Bent Nail or Antiqued Iron - page 6 of http://www.judikins.com/catalog/catalog.html)

4. Hit with heat gun again until embossing powder melts. Touch up any areas that need it with clear embossing ink, followed by a second application of the powder.

I couldn't find a good clear example of what this looks like online, but here's a scrapbook layout where the scroll piece is done with Judikins' Patina Jade, so you can see the variability of the metal colors: http://www.createmykeepsake.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=31280&cat=895&limit=recent

I want to add more collage items but not quiet sure what. I have to explore my bag of goodies. I feel it needs more but I am still exploring ideas. If ya'll have any please say so.

Pilan-
I"ll just let you go to it- you'll do it!
Love those colour combinations!
I work with acrylics, so I'm wondering what you used to adhere the rust without shellacing over it; as it still seems dry?

HarrySpitz-
You're man with tastes after my own heart! Like the ones with the silvery effects!

RoseQueen-
So, via HarrySpitz the the way to doing a "digital" take has been paved!
Is that road still open?
( I've a great obsession to work madly in this media in the current moment; as it's the base for a big series of little projects I'm now caught uo in doing )

...though we have our own RUSTBUCKET HALL OF FAME down garage-way yonder....:D

Cheers,
WildGoose/Chris

These are wonderful. Harry rust is probably one of my favorite things to look at. This is the first time I have actually used it in any art. I think rust has a artistic look as it is. I do take pictures of rusted items from time to time.

I love the color of the can with the green scarab on it. Since I am typing now I can't scroll back to see who's it was but its very neat.

I first pounded out the panel of rust on my garage floor with a rubber mallet as flat as I could. Then I set it on the wood where I wanted it to be and traced around it.

After tracing around it I took it off and did my base layers in acrylics.

Next I took some thick molding paste and smeared it in the area where it would lay (where I traced) and also brushed the paste on the backside of the rust. I then lined it up and gently pushed it onto the wood so both layers of pastes can meet together and dry. I let it dry overnight to make sure it was solid. I put some clips on the areas where the rust wanted to come up a bit. The next day I went in with oil paints.

This is how I worked this piece up. I painted a landscape last night so today I will work on this rust piece again.

Have a great weekend.

Hi Everyone,,
I haven't been here in a while,,,but I'm loving this challenge,,,
all things rusty are so appealing to me!
I'm still working with this old screen wire and recently completed this small one.
I hope it's not considered cheating, as you can't really see the rust in this photo very well, but I promise it's there.I'm wanting to go larger with these
pieces,,,but I'm almost out of screen,,,,,haven't investigated yet, but so much of the new stuff is plastic. :crying:
On heavy paper, 8x10.
acrylic, skins,,screening. Photo is at an angle, to prevent glare,as it's got a heavy gloss varnish, that gives a feel of glass to it.
It's title is: "Virus, virus",,,as I just had one removed from my pc,,,,and also my gastro tract. Neither was pretty. :p

Babs, it's lovely! Nothing is considered cheating in this forum...just innovation  Anyway, I'm sorry that you had to deal with the virus thingy on both fronts, but at least you can joke about it now. Always great to have you join in :)

Rose Queen
08-19-2008, 05:43 PM
I really like your piece, Babs, and as Cyndi says, nothing is cheating here! You'll have to make a post on freecycle.org in your area to see if anyone has any metal screening squirreled away in their garages that they'd like to get rid of -- plastic definitely leaves something to be desired!

Cyndi,,,hey thanks for always being so welcoming to this straggle in person! Believe me, I don't know which was worse,,,I SO miss the pc when it's not available. Just glad it's the only one who had to go to the hospital, lol!

Diana,Thanks,,,and what a great idea! I'm sure there has to be some of those old screen doors and windows out there somewhere! My daughter in Dallas has a great time with freecycle. I always forget about it. The screen I have is rotting, and it's perfect!

Chris, thanks,,,,it is a really 'touchy-feely' kinda thing, lol!

I just couldn't get my act together this month, so I have to submit a piece that is older...sorry! I'll try to do better in September.

A Horizontal bookstand, like old libraries have/had...but completely rejuvenated! - like this much, it's a very  display idea...and your lively execution, especially with those twisted wire shapes you've added on...:)

Query: Looks like a wide bicycle pedal or a horse stirrup for the lyre-like shape ...am I close?!

Thanks Chris! I wish I knew what the metal thingie really is. Both of those are good guesses, but the spike at the top goes through two holes, and I found the pieces together that way. I know it kind of looks like I've wired on the spike from the angle of my photo, but nope.

I picked it up on one of my husband's and my numerous walks, and he sighed indulgently...
