This was begun from life, and I spent some time later on refinement. This girl has really nice features and aspires to theater and the arts. I've been looking a lot art Sargent and learning, hopefully, some of his process. He had such range of color, and skill. On Canson with a variety of pastels-about 12x14.

Ken,

You excel with portraits. WOW! Her face just pops up out of the page. It always amazes me what is done with canson.

Carol- Thanks! At one point, I really did not enjoy portraits at all. It is now a passion for me. They are demanding, but I think that is the challenge. Canson is very familiar to me, and a good ground to work on. I will be starting more works on a sanded paper soon, like Wallis.

Jim- Thanks! Flesh tones are so relative- I do respond to what I see, but the tones from person to person are different, and I think my response varies sometimes, too.

Thank you very much! I like realism, in the sense of color, value and drawing, but I'm learning focus also... what are the necessary visuals?

Thanks, Holley. Inspiration helps me see where I want to go next. By imagining your future, you make it real. Start with the flat side of a pastel- it is a lot of fun, and is faster, and more flexible. You could.

As soon as I saw this it reminded me of Sargent's portraiture...extremely well done Ken! So lifelike.

That is a very high compliment, Deidre- Thank You! I admire his work greatly. Why not study from the greats!
I want to do more of the figure into a portrait soon, and am working towards that. I'm pretty comfortable with heads at this point.

I just took a peek at your website. You do beautiful work. The facial features in your portraits seem to pop, yet look so natural. What I really admire is how you seem to capture people's spirit on paper and Megan is no exception.

Adele- Thank you for looking at my work, and website, and the great compliments. I've been doing art a long time, and still very much enjoy learning and growing- it is a constant.
I can't completely explain the spirit thing, but believe it happens more by feel. That is a really nice thing to say! Thanks!

Absolutely love this portrait and the softness you've captured.
The edges are soft and the colors glow. Hurrah for your inspiration.

Barb- I have been trying to develop a focus only where details need to be sharp, and let the rest go soft, but suggested. It's a fun process of editing.
