Just finished the first in a series of Western art......, rodeo, cows, horses, leisure. This one is a team roper watching others, waiting his turn.

This is my first attempt at Grisaille. My biggest problem was putting color to it, I loved the grays! I am in the middle of another that I will leave in totally gray tones, really makes for an interesting subject!

C&C always welcome. This is done, but I will take your comments to heart on my next one.

Looks very good.

The only drawback with grisaille is that it is very difficult to get strong color. I would suggest that you try using a Sienna toned background the next time.

this is wonderful, and I'm like you, have trouble adding the colour when the undercolour works so well! But I think I'm in the minority, I LOVE monochrome paintings:)

Keenart, I thought about sienna, but felt it would be too rich for the drab dusty boots and jeans. I'll think more about it with future ones, thanks!

We are going to visit my kids this weekend, but I am dragging all my paint stuff with me. Should be an experience to say the least. So, HOPEfully I will get the other one done in monochrome. Then Iwill attempt it again in color.

Wonderful; I love the final colours with the grisaille.

Sue, this is so good!! It reminds me so much of my hubby standing in his boots (minus the spurs tho') ready to climb up in the big truck. Maybe that is why they call truckers cowboys? lol! I love it!!

I totally disagree with this. Yes of course you can get strong colour with grisaille. Why would you not be able to get them?

Beautiful work.

This is great, I especially like the leather straps on the spurs.

 The different textures you've achieved here are wonderful! The denim, the metal of the spurs, the leather - all nicely done. I think it's a great painting - very realistic!

Isn't one of the reasons for using the Grisaille technique so that you can create more depth? I think you've done that very well here, for instance, the folds in the pant legs! Like the others, I'm looking forward to seeing more like this! :D

You've captured the dusty jeans and boots really well. The spurs look great! Nice work.

Wonderful job on this. Perfect folds in the jeans, and you've definitely caught the dusty, dirty look. Spurs are great too!

I like this a lot. I have done many grisaille pieces, but have yet to add colour to one. I think the muted colours add realism to this piece. Very nice work

Thanks everyone! Your enthusiasm makes me want to paint and paint! I will be doing my first vendor show at the end of August and hope I can get enough paintings done in time. Yikes! Lots to do, so little time......

If this is your first you might try to have lots of little works to bring the customer in that are not too expensive. Everyone is looking for a bargain these days.

I plan on my originals, plus prints of them matted and unmatted, and notecards. Some ACEOs too if I have time.
