The truck is coming along very well. I think your background vegetation is wonderful!

07-07-2008, 04:38 PM
Thanks Guys! It's still on the go...did a bit more after my weekend away..,

07-07-2008, 05:41 PM
I have to agree with everyone else! It's looking fabulous ;-)

07-07-2008, 06:06 PM
Hi Deirdre....hope it was a good weekend away..... From the peanut gallery here...or is that the popcorn gallery here....That front wheel is beginning to look a little small there. I realize that you have only sketched it in and may not be doing much more but a bit more width would make it more substantial...or a narrowing of the hub in the center (making it a taller an narrower oval) would have the same results being that it seems to be on a bit of an outward turn.

Cheers, Dianna http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/07-Jul-2008/34523-34523-0_popcorn_muncher.gif

07-07-2008, 09:15 PM
What an odd old character this guy is!

I love this, especially the little sprig making it's nest under the hood!

Wonderful WIP, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Carol! This is the final photo taken in daylight

Hmmm Deirdre...your grass is telling two different stories...not that it can't happen but it makes the viewer wonder if it is error. I like the veiwer to wonder but not whether or not I am in error. :)

The back grass is standing tall and strong ...or a different variety I presume from it's height but the frontal grass on the right is very wimpy or trampled...I am not sure which. I love the way you have carried that lilttle bit of sunlight onto that area but think you could have added an even stronger light or more of it moving from where it is to the right but not to the left as the shadow of the truck would cut it off.

I would love to see some of that frontal grass in a more vertical layout...perkier perhhaps and possibly some darker hidden areas for depth in the biggest masses.

This being one of my favourite subjects (abandoned vehicles)...I love it and you have done it very well sunshine.

Cheers, Dianna

07-08-2008, 03:43 PM
Dianna...you are right...but then so am I! :p :D The grass around the truck is trampled!! Here is the ref...

Whilst I haven't copied every grass and weed...I have tried to be faithful to the ref...perhaps I should get my artistic licence out of my back pocket? :D

07-08-2008, 04:06 PM
So we are both right... Do two rights make a wrong

Artistic license, yes...we should all carry one of those. Great work Deirdre!! I think this is one of your biggest endeavours to date

Cheers, Dianna :cat:

Oh, this is so beautiful! I just found this thread and enjoyed watching your progress. I cannot get ferns to grow as houseplants, and there they are growing out of the front of this lovely old truck! Wonderful work!!!

07-08-2008, 04:32 PM
this wonderful...

07-08-2008, 04:35 PM
Just found this too, and it is fabulous! Love how those luxurious grasses and weeds and whatnot is taking posession of the old truck. The 'jungle' always wins.

You really found all those fabulous colourshifts in the truck, and your rust is great! Very ambitious project, and you succeeded!

07-08-2008, 05:16 PM
REally Really nice. I like the trampled grass.. someone has been here to take a peak, perhaps searching for forgotten change under the seat or just some kid pretending to go for a ride. Nifty! Good job!

07-08-2008, 05:45 PM
Great job, Deirdre, love it.

07-08-2008, 05:55 PM
absolutely stunning !! ... truly fabulous job !! ... great reference and great painting of it !!! ... i kinda see dianna's point tho ... in the reference there are more of the odd spikes of grass in many of the clumps, esp in front of the bumper and i think a few more standing blades and standing/bent blades would be effective in adding to that bedraggled look of the location and the truck ... but that doesn't mean it doesn't look spectacular as you have it !! ... :):) ... it's just my 2¢ worth ... :)

07-08-2008, 07:10 PM
fabulous finish Deirdre but how about adding a suggestion of the foreground grass colour into the uprights in the rear to blend the two areas.

07-08-2008, 07:34 PM
Awesome! The rust is superbly rendered. The lighting, the colors, all great! (sorry, everybody else already used all of the descriptive adjectives).

07-08-2008, 09:30 PM
I love the reds and greens together.
These old trucks have such personality...it's that face on the front that makes one smile.

07-09-2008, 07:37 AM
Thanks everyone...you've been very kind!

I've fiddled a bit more...not sure if it works...but I have to stop before the weeds take over!

07-09-2008, 08:43 AM
Great progress and finish on this one! I'm glad you refined the back tire- my only suggestions would be: the very light leaves in far upper right are a bit distracting, the bumper could be darker.

07-09-2008, 10:25 AM
i think the changes you made are super !! ... i *love* the new branch coming out from under the hood !!! ... ... fabulous painting !!

07-09-2008, 10:38 AM
LOVE your signature Deirdre...and the additional twig under the hood :D I would highlight that new grass just a bit more...as if it had hot spots of sunlight hitting it....just a couple.

Cheers, Di

I've been meaning to write Deirdre and tell you how much I love this piece. I too have an attraction to painting old truck and your rendition of the rusted metal and setting is magnificent.

Go win a prize with this piece!!! Barb

07-11-2008, 01:23 AM
Thanks guys...you really have been so kind spurring me on! I wish I could tell you I was vying for a prize...but the truth is...there is no competition...It was done for the local art show, which I'm organising, in aid of our beautiful Saxon church's fabric fund. So even if there was a competition...I couldn't enter it as the organiser!
I would like to say how much I enjoyed doing this subject....the rusty surface was pure joy to translate....I miss it already...so I shall have to seek out another!:D
Thanks to those who stayed the distance!!:wink2:
