Here is my latest. My second color portrait and my first on velour. It turned out what I expected. Being a Fan of velour paper. Loved it. It's a 12"x14" on grey velour paper. Soft pastels. Please let me know your thoughts on it. C&C welcome.

Beautiful!!
The velour paper lends itself well to the softness you've acheived in her face. She looks a little like a young Natalie Portman.
Very nice!

Beautiful portrait, and beautiful child! Well done. I would only suggest varying the background shapes behind her- left and right could be more differing- less mirrored, especially near her head.

Rose,

This is incredible-really thought I was looking at the reference, as at first glance her face just grabs you! Beautiful, I almost think her face makes her look older than she probably is. But this is gorgeous!

I also would like to see your pallet of colors you used.

Thanks for sharing this with us!

Oh..Wow...Thanks so very much dear Friends Veronica, Don, Jim, Karen, Adiro, Deirdre, Terence, Violet, Cindy, Cindy, Gail, Mike, Gary, Mary, Ken, Holley, Eden, Katherine, Ann, Paul, Dea, Paula, Terry, Carol and Rudi.
I've done this painting in part from a photo and in part from life with my daughter modeling for me to get her skin tones and eye colors right. She is turning six this coming wednesday...but she looks older than she is. She's tall. She loves modeling for me (even though she's bashful around new faces). She loves dressing up and putting on hats, scarves...and all the accessories she thinks will make herself "cute". She's adorable.
About my pallette: I've used several shades of pink, beige/browns, some grey, some greens and blues, I don't have the name of the colors...so I took a shot of the colors I've used...not very many because I have just a few small pastel sets...Please feel free to ask as many questions as you want...I'll try to answer it.

Wonderful portrait. A very sensitive rendering. You can feel the love for your subject. When you work on the velour, do you blend?

Let me throw in my WOW as well. This is a lovely, lovely portrait! The skin is so life-like!

I have to say that I find the background a little distracting in its sharp contrast to the realist style of the portrait. If it were softer it probably wouldn't take my eye away from this beautiful little girl as much.

Thanks so very much for taking time to comment Anne, Barry, Kathy, Tracy, Merethe, Binkie, Dianna, Nana and Nicky!!

Anne, I recommend Hahnemuhle for velour papers..but the best velvety surface to work on is Suede paper.
Kathy, the only way to "blend" the colors on velour is by applying layer over layer of pastels...there's no way to blend with fingers or any other tool...as far as I'm concerned.

Personally I appreciate the loose, painterly background. The color features the skin tones and the scarf, bringing out her hair and eyes, and it also gives evidence of the hand of the artist. It's a wonderful portrait. You're a very talented lady!
