View Full Version : Project Discussion: Copper Play!!!!

Jennifer Geldard
07-12-2002, 02:34 PM
A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Copper Play!!!!
Project Leader: Jennifer Geldard
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Let's do some experimenting.

Lots of recent discussions about copper and it's reaction with glass has lead to some questions about what forms of copper are useful in glass work.

I've heard..."foil, leaf, wire, even shavings.
Encase it, leave it exposed, create wire designs,"....... the possibilities are endless.

Show us what you do. I'd love to see the failures as well...

Also remember there's a great place for loading pictures of work in progress... Let's use it.

Maybe when we're done this can be a group submission for a How-to article in lapidary Journal??? (Keep dreaming, Jen)

Don't limit yourself... some of the best techniques resulted from mistakes!

Have Fun!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=242)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

OK, I tried copper wire tonight and it was a total disaster. It was charred silver/black looking. I guess my assumption is that it's not pure copper, but I would have thought hardware store copper wire would be...? Any ideas? Maybe I'll have to try PC or phone wire... Just one of those crappy bead nights in general...

If the bead comes out of the kiln with any of the copper mess left on it, I'll post it. I was so frustrated with it, I loaded red, yellow, EDP and coral on top of it - still turned stuff black even through all that.

I have some beads in the kiln from today with some star shaped punches of copper mesh. We'll see how they turn out. I am dying to try some copper foil, ut our lousy little Michaels has none. I'd order it, but I'd hate to pay shipping for such a small thing. Anyone coming to the Gathering, who might bring me some foil?

Ok, blend up some purple that you like.
1/1 darkest amethyst/periwinkle,
1/2 black/periwinkle
or whatever your favorite purple is....
make latticino in: sky blue/pale sky blue/intense black
make some silvered ivory stringer

focals: black base/white enamel/copper leaf---fry
latticino around one side-melt in (fry it a little)
white dots around other side-melt in
sky blue on the white-melt
blended purple on top-melt
case

Other beads, random applications of latticino, ivory, etc.
case

Hope that makes sense! It's getting late...

The heart is a paper punch of copper... tooling foil maybe? It's pretty thick. Then I just placed it on the black and encased with clear. Whenever I use copper tubing, wire or this thick foil, it turns red. I've never seen it turn aqua. Maybe the thinner foil or leaf does that?

b2beads
07-31-2002, 02:37 PM
I think to get the aqua, you have to put the copper on white (or at least light) enamel. Haven't tried it yet, but will soon, I hope.

I wanted y'all to see what I did. I posted six different things I made, but I think I'm going to like this the most.

I found I was never quite burning enough copper off, so I started using less, then I decided to make a CSI stringer (coppered-silvered-ivory)

I made a gather of dark ivory, rolled it in a lot of silver foil, then rolled it in a couple of strips of copper leaf. I melted some dots on ivory then put the clear dots on top.

These beads are small, so I can't tell a lot from them, so I wanted to try it in larger quantities and with other colors.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking I"ll try the webbing effect with intense black and then layer some of the CSI over it. What else do you think I should try?

All in all, this was fun!

I love that look! They look very exotic.

So you didn't have to use enamel to get that bluish color? I've been wondering how people do the copper thing to one part of the bead, and don't have enamel spilling over on to the rest of the bead; so far all I've done is cover the whole bead w/white enamel and apply the copper to the whole bead, so I end up with speckled blue and white beads. Its nice, but getting a little boring.

I will try that stringer thing!
Thanks,
Patti

OH MY GOSH!

I forgot! I DID put just a light sprinkling of white enamel before rolling in the copper!

I am so glad you asked that - I would have gotten out to the shop tonight and wondered why my stringers weren't working! I had forgotten all about that!

Noel,

Of course you can. The trick is to keep the heat to a minimum.

When you sandwich the copper between layers of glass, use a watered down version of Elmers white glue. I do about 1/2 and 1/2. Let dry. It won't leave any discoloration on the clear.

Just watch it when you get to your full fusing temp.
