A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Summer Color Palette Stretch
Project Leader: b2beads
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Other
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

The goal of this project is to show the incredible variety possible even when your color palette is limited to just a few choices!

This project is open to all mediums (and, in fact, participation using a wide variety of art forms is eagerly anticipated!)

You will be asked to limit your color palette to primarily two "base" colors, however variations off of those 2 colors and color mixing are allowed.

The "theme" is simply that the resulting final works should evoke a feeling of summer! Hot & steamy, cool and refreshing, casual and relaxed - whatever summer brings to mind for you!

Here are the guidelines:

1. Check out the color palette reference image and pick TWO of the THREE colors shown.

For glass artists: working with moretti, the specific rod colors chosen are: Lt. Lemon Yellow (408), Coral (420) & Trans. Cobalt Blue (060). For other types of glass users, pick 2 colors from your palette that are similar. Glass artists may use either an opaque or transparent form of the color (pick the closest equivalent as there isn't usually a 1:1 match...)

For other art forms, chose colors close to those shown. Cobalt and lemon yellow are fairly "standard". The coral selected is a bit more pink than orange, so select a similar color in that range.

For photography, you can interpret the colors a bit more broadly - the base colors shown should be the predominant colors in the work.

2. Once you select your base colors, take a photo of the actual, unmixed colors you are using and put that in you project "in progress" folder for reference (if applicable to the art form being used.)

3. Clear & black are freebies.

4. You can pick white or ivory as your final freebie.

5. Metals will be allowed - gold, silver, palladium, copper. Leaf or foil.

6. Color mixing is encouraged, but certainly not required.

7. The final submission or submissions should make use of multiple "techniques" applicable to your art form - preferably 5 different techniques.

For example, in watercolor, use of washes, dry brushing, ink + washes, etc., can be combined in one work, or in multiple. For glass, multiple techniques such as casing, complex canes, harlequin, hollow, etc. can be in one single work, or in separate beads/marbles/pipes/fused pieces/blown pieces.

8. A specific "cafe chat" night will be set and posted at a later date. That time can be used to ask questions, discuss problems, learn about techniques, clarify things, etc.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=241)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Yea, it finally showed up! Good heavens there are suddenly a zillion projects - good thing there are no deadlines!

If anyone has any questions of suggestions, post 'em here. I also meant to include that etching and other finishing techniques for glass are allowed and encouraged.

I'll repost the colors here:

1. Pick 2 of the 3 colors below - Cobalt blue, Lt. Lemon Yellow, Coral. You can use a corresponding transparent if you like.

2. Clear and black are "freebies" and are allowed.

3. Either white or ivory can also be used - pick one.

4. All metals, finishes, techniques are welcome.

5. Have fun!

Do we have to post all 5 at once or can we post less? I made 2 yesterday.

Nope, you can post you're first two now if you like. You can either post them in the project progress library now and the full group later or if you wanted to post each individually as a final entry, you could do that, too. The project progress is for that exact purpose - to show work along the way when you're not quite finished. Can't wait to see!

This is awesome! I can see a very organic necklace built around this--with coral in various shades, dark pearls, and maybe a lttle amber. Jeanette Cook or Marla Gassner's work comes to mind....or mine-someday!

I'm slow, but I get there. I finally bit the bullet and posted my pics from the Summer Palette challenge. These are but a few. I've found that if I don't love the colors together once I get started, I don't end up with my best beads. I think I'd have had more fun with the yellow/coral combination, but I wanted to see what I could do with a combination that fewer people had used for their projects. Now I know why they didn't pick the yellow/transparent colbalt!

No! This was an open-medium project. There are "instructions" for artists in mediums other than glass (in the color section).

I've been hoping to see some other work with the limited palette choices....mine was a rather dismal failure (I think because I ended up not loving the colors together).

Judy
looking forward to see your digital work

Thanks Linda! I had a great time with the beads for this challenge! It really made me look at the glass a little differently than I usually would. I'll bet you have some of the stringers that I used for that set. I made a bunch and think I included some in all of the little stringer packages I sent out.

Carolyn,
I haven't been back to this thread for ages, and just noticed the cool names that you came up with for a couple of the sets. I'm usually stumped and just throw on whatever pops into my head for names....most of the time not very exciting. Your talent for finding just the right name adds an exotic appeal to the beads!
