Thanks Gary...I just noticed the Angelina Jolie portrait in your banner. I just finished doing that same reference image for a lipstick painting video.

Very nice start. The boy's sweater absolutely looks like wool knit. What a sweet little boy. This should be a charmer.

Just messing around with the background colors and values. Trying to figure out the palette I want to use to frame the face before I start working on it. I don't really like the colors of the reference.

Oh my gosh, this is the cutest face! Very nice painting of him...great looseness. I really like the chartreuse background color with the burgundy.

The depth and contrast you have achieved but still maintained the softness of the young childs face is extremely well done. I really like the use of the cool shadows - wpnderful skin tone

It is interesting to see the choices you are making regarding the background colors, etc. This is a subject I'm trying to help my students understand - they so often paint what the see even when it isn't the best choice for the painting! I like what you've done so far, and knowing your other work am looking forward to seeing the finish.

Ok...opened the eyes up some more. They were off. Started doing detail work to the right eye and playing around with optical blending.

Well, I'm calling this done. Wasn't really happy with my experimenting with optical blending.

Two different pictures under different temperature light.

Been a while since I visited WC and obviously I've been missing something.

May I ask...what is optical blending?

Really nice finish Jason, I particularly like how you have created a more interesting background and tied it to the subject so the colours are the perfect frame for the flesh tones. Thank you for sharing
All the best

Optical blending is when the eye and brain mixes the colors. You can find examples in impressionism and pointillism. Seurat is a perfect example. Inkjet printing and cathode ray televisions/monitors are micro examples. Basically its when opposing colors when viewed at a distance create a new color when seen.

Jason, I'd say your experimenting was highly successful; both temps are excellent but the top view is my preference. There's more warmth in the flesh tones and I find the more liberal use of soft warm greens on and around your boy's face really add zing and seem to pop the image forward separating it altogether from the background even as it unites the entire painting.

A stunning painting that takes the viewer far beyond a fine portrait. On another note, thanks for the description of optical blending.

Jason this is wonderful, I love the background colour and the bits of it on the hat really make the painting. How do you decide what colours to use? I always get stuck on those things,
