2 of my latest projects. First one is a cat napping 8"x10" soft pastels on velour. :cat:
The second one is a still life 8"x10 soft pastels on Ampersand board. I've used a wonderful Ref. photo by Kim Denise (a.k.a. Orchidacea) Thanks so much Kim.
Hope you enjoy! C&C welcome! Thanks!!!

Wow. excellent work on the kitty.

Other one is nice too.

Hi Rose,

Two very good paintings, well done! I have not tried Ampersand board yet, I will have to pick some up. I still tend to choose LaCarte paper probably because of the colours!

Not only is the cat incredible, but the pillow....WOW! The second is excellent, too!

Rose, your work is incredible. The cat looks so realistic that my fingers are itching to pet it. Your apple is very nicely done...it feels three deminsional as well.

Rose - these are both so great!!! I love cats and you've captured yours so beautifully. But I think the apple and plate are equally good. Great work!

Hi Rose, thank you for sharing. Fantastic cat, I have to say in my opinion nobody does it better on velour, always a treat to see your work. The still life is lovely too

These are incredible! If I had an award, I'd give it to you...these certainly deserve one.

04-18-2008, 11:05 PM
The cat couldn't be lovlier, it has vitality and spark with the colors you've used and the way you've combined them. I like the workmanship of the apple and saucer, the composition does not have the life of the first painting however. I wonder how it would have worked to have moved the setup more off center. I always enjoy your work and have enjoyed watching it grow.

omg ... two lovelies !! ... fabulous stuff !! ....

04-19-2008, 12:54 AM
The cat is stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

04-19-2008, 05:47 AM
I agree with all the others, excellent work!!

04-19-2008, 06:02 AM
That cat is so gorgeous. You have done a wonderful job on the ears - the light showing through and the little tufts of fur on the end - wonderful!! And I love that soft white paw hanging over the cushion. Fantastic work. Your still life is terrific too, but it's the animals that really do it for me.

04-19-2008, 06:16 AM
Oh Rose, absolutely stunning!! Both pieces are great but that kitty is incredible!

Thanks so much for viewing my pieces and commenting, Retha, Judy, Don, Merethe, Gail, Karen, Kathy, Pam, W.C. Lee, Gary, Pastel Lover, T.J., Violet, Mike, Ingrid, Jayde and Holley. Very much appreciated!!!
The apple & saucer is a gift for my daughter's teacher. The picture here is very washed out...the reds have more variation in person...and the same goes for the saucer. I'm going to frame it today...I was reading on the Ampersand website "how to frame it"...never done it before. It's a lot of work. Let's see how's going to turn out.

Your work is so beautiful!!!! I love the cat. And the fact that it is on velour has made me want to try it again. I was given tons of the stuff in various colors, but what I have is Swiss Micro. Have you ever heard of it? What sort have you used here? I was also given a velour board scrap from a framer that I was saving for 2 cats and your wonderful painting has inspired me! The feeling it gives is great. Thanks so much!

Let me tell you, it may entertain...

I'm thinking: I've looked in on all threads except this one. Shall I bother? Weeelll .... Oh, well, let's look at another of those pet portraits...

The cat is fantastic, and I mean the whole painting, with surroundings, not just the beauty on the pillow. Apple is nice, cool perspective, but the CAT, ah, the Cat!

I want this cat ... and I'm really a dog person. Oh and I'll eat the apple while I pet the cat. .... Wonderful!!!

Holy Cow!!! Stunning work!! WOW!!

Can you tell I love these? :D

04-19-2008, 09:16 PM
Hi Rose, these are both wonderful. The cat looks as if I could reach out and stroke it and the softness of the pillow is fantastic too. The red in the apple is wonderulf. Great work on both.

04-19-2008, 09:24 PM
Love both of them!!!

Thanks for the kind words IMaybe, Colorix, qpdoll, Melodie, Paula, Mississhipi, Catrus, Adriana and Nana!!!

IMaybe, you are so lucky to have been given tons of velour (where did you get it?)..Lol..In fact I've been using Micro Swiss for the price. I get it from ASW art supply online. It's much cheaper than the "Hanehmule" velour. My favorite among the "velvet" type papers is the Suede...but I charge so little for commissions that I have to get the cheaper paper to make some profit. Not that is a bad paper, don't get me wrong, I don't have anything to complain about. It just feels a little bit harsh when you layer your pastels compared to Suede...but go ahead and use it up. If you don't like it PM me and I'll give you my mailing address and you mail me the stuff...Lol...

Thanks again everyone!!!

Lovely work Rose. I am particularly taken by the apple.

04-22-2008, 03:00 PM
Well since noone has really mentioned it, I just had to let you know that the cat is incredible!! AMAZING work!!!

04-23-2008, 04:13 PM
These are absolutely amazing. WHen high realism works it is awesome. The cat is amazing but I also really like the interesting perspective on the apple. That is what makes it more interesting than just a lovely rendering.

I would love to know what materials you used.

Thanks for the nice comments Applebee, sharcol91 and plindley.
Plindley, I've used velour paper for the cat and several pastel brands(Rembrandts, Derwent, Winsor & Newton, Sennelier and Mungyo professional).
For the apple I've used the same brands of pastels but the surface was a gray Ampersand board. Thanks for asking!

04-24-2008, 10:26 AM
Both lovely pictures, but I have to love that cat. I can almost feel the warmth of the sun from that beautiful light on his back.

04-24-2008, 10:34 AM
Fantastic paintings especially of the cat!
It makes you want to reach over and stroke the fur!

That's really amazing! The light on the cat and the pillow is absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing! I enjoy both the cat and the apple endlessly!

WOW , two excellent paintings Rose. I particularly like the napping cat, you have caught him perfectly.

04-25-2008, 07:52 AM
Rose, the bar is always very very high when you set it!! They are both magnificent. Of course, I identify with the animal the most and the light in it is extraordinary, but the still life - well, that saucer is amazing!!

04-25-2008, 09:08 AM
Love 'em!
Especially the double paw so prominent.
And the red background on #2 is rich and soft....perfect.

I have that china pattern, inherited from my parents. I love the detail.

04-28-2008, 05:08 PM
ok now im jealous lol, truly wonderful work you are a very talented lady-cant wait to see more

04-28-2008, 05:46 PM
Ditto, ditto, ditto! All except for the comment about the centering. I think it is just right, with the head over on the left and the paw in the center.

04-28-2008, 06:35 PM
Rose - how do you keep that cat away from the apple?

LOVE THESE PAINTINGS! You post them and make it sound so simple but I know that cat fur took a bit of attention and time.

Great stuff!!! Barb

05-01-2008, 11:03 AM
Fabulous work  ...both pieces but the cat is downright amazing! You said the apple is a gift to your child's teacher...all I ever got was chocolates and trinkets! You will have teachers fighting to get your kid in their classroom for next year!

Thanks for the nice words Geeta, Nicky and Susan!!!
Susan, I gave the Apple painting to the Teacher last week when I had lunch with my daughter at school...the Teacher LOVED it...she was so pleased!!! Some of the other Teachers that were in the lunchroom were amazed by the painting and asked me lots of questions. It was so nice to see their reaction!
