A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Locked Heart
Project Leader: Laura Brito
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Glass
Medium: Other
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

I came up with this design some time ago and I have always like the idea of a Locked Heart. It makes me think that two peoples Hearts are locked together as one.

This is pretty easy to do once you get some practice. I form two large Rondells on the mandrel right next to each other. I like to make it slightly heavy on the bottom. I add two lobes on the top of the bead and melt them in until it looks like it is part of the same mass. So now I have something that sorta looks like a heart. I take my razor blade tool and cut and indentation in between the two lobes on the top to separate them more and to make the cleft. If the bumps do not look good enough I usually take the same color of rod I used on each side of the Heart and touch each lobe slightly in the top middle area and when it is attached slightly I pull upwards, flame cut this off and let the lobe retract again and your lobes will be nice and rounded.

For the bottom point I take my tweesers and heat the bottom of the heart and grab and pull it down, sometimes I twist too (which looks neat too). I then heat it until it rounds out some more as well.

Then I heat the center of the heart where the line goes down the middle, once this is hot enough I take the tweesers and grab and do a half twist, I release the glass (if you get it to hot the glass sometimes attaches to the tweesers, just leave it out of the flame and rock your tweesers back and forth until it releases) then I melt this in a tad until I am happy with the shape, I turn it around and do the same thing!

I flame anneal the bead, and pop it in the kiln for annealing.

There you go, you have a heart that makes a great pendant bead!

I just posted mine.
I've been playing with copper leaf lately, and this gave me a chance to play some more :)

Jen, it's really gorgeous!

I did a bead set over a year ago using copper leaf over white and encasing it in clear, and the resulting color was very yummy. I was skeptical at first, because the leaf looked like just a burned-up black mess, but was quite surprised after I did the encasing.

More bead pix, Jen - love 'em!!

Jennifer - Great heart! Is that enamel on the left and copper foil on the right? Is the base bead the same or different on each side? B2

Okay, this is the first time I'm actually able to poke around in here. But... unless the pic is in the message, I don't know where they are! Is there a photo album section?

I'm still not familiar with this forum, so bear with me if this is obvious to the rest of you! :)

Yes, go to communities above and pick art projects, you can browse the index, we are near the top, click on that, then go to final images. You will see a list of all the poeple who have done it. When looking at their project you can comment and it will put a comment in this message thread!

Pretty neat.....I am mind boggled just to think of all the work Scott adn the moderators have put into this site, we have alot of thank them for.

Hi Richard,

I think your question is directed to me? As I've stated in previous posts, as eager as I am get started, various circumstances (will not bore you with the details!) have prevented me from doing so. I am hoping to be up & going by the fall. In the meantime, I like to keep up with the boards, so that when I am able to get myself set up, I will be able to make more informed decisions. I may not be able to offer much advice right now on techniques, equipment, & the like (while storing what I glean from here for future reference!), but as I have been collecting & making jewelry with lampwork beads for several years now, I do think I have good advice to offer from that aspect. Plus, I'm darn good with the cheering guy!

Beth

So..I guess the gist of that is that you won't be seeing any of my beads for a while, as I'm definitely not going to be posting the first ones!

Guess what, Elizabeth. NO ONE's hearts looked great in the beginning. It is only by making a bazillion (well, not really that many) that your hearts will look wonderful. Anyway, there is really no such thing as a bad heart bead. Hugs Karen

We;; at least your going to have at your hands a great deal of information when you start. Which will be best for what ever you want to do. That is something we have here. everything is covered so well. I missed your post about it, that is why i asked. I can't and don't read all the posts. I'm not here as much so i miss alot. as time goes on i'll be here even less. My torch time is more important to me. then my net time on the computer.

Thanks for filling me in.

Wow, great hearts everyone! I need to check out all of the entries for the various projects.

Richard, yes I'm absorbing info as I go, & will be checking the archives when I am ready, plus picking your brains. I know what you mean about keeping up...I was away from here for a few days, & I don't think I will get to all of the posts I've missed. I was kind of in a slump last weekend, & feeling extremely lazy...did give me time to read all of the posts, but was not too much fun nonetheless. Trying to get in the swing of things again here though! Laura & Lluvia have inspired me to dig out my gemstone beads that have been languishing here for a while!
