Hi all! I'm sorry i've been away from this forum for so long! I'd like to begin new workshops in September. It's very simple to participate. We read the book, one chapter per week and set a designated time to meet in the chat room for discussion on the chapter. In order to accomodate as many people as possible we'll do one in the afternoon and one in the evening. What we have to do at this point is pin point the most convenient days and times. Tuesdays are generally good for me. If you have any thoughts on this or would like to sign up please do so here. I'd also like to appoint an assistant (or two) for this workshop. In the event that i'd have to miss a meeting this person could host the chat session. Nothing too complicated really :) We have our own room designated for this purpose but you'll need a password to get in. This way we can chat uninterupted. Thoughts?
Thanks,
Cheryl

I would be interested in started TAW in September, also. I don't think I even started Chapeter 2. I like the syngery of a group. Sometime I think it would be lovely to do it with a real time group, but groups like this usually meet in the evening, and evening is when I can't to things (I babysit).

I'll be glad to assist you, Cheryl. The only problem is that I have a watercolor class on Tuesday nights starting in September. Sunday nights are usually good for me. I'm usually home washing clothes so I can chat while I wait for my clothes.

Thank you Dana. That'll be great! :) Abednago, Johnab, JavaGirl, Georgie and Aspring, i have you guys on the list. We can have a Sunday evening session as well as a Tuesday evening session. We'll cover the same chapter on both days. That way if you miss one you can catch up on the other. Is there anyone out there who absolutley needs an afternoon session? Logging onto chat is very easy and we'll talk you through it. ;). Once there you can change rooms very easily. You do not need a password to get into the general chat room but once there, when you want to move into the TAW (The Artsists Way) room you'll need the password. I haven't decided on a new one yet but once i do i'll make sure to send it to each of you. I think we're going to have a great group! I've done this with other people in the past and it's really good to be able to share thoughts on this program as we go through it together.

Hi - I am brand new at this but have looked at trying the Artist's way for a long time - Seems like time to jump in. Tuesdays are great for me except for the second Tuesday of each month - I could do a Sunday on that week it seems like - I'm a little nervous but thought I'd try!!!

Welcome Crey, to WC! I'll add you to the list! Nothing to be nervous about, we're just a bunch of freinds getting together to talk about the book. You'll enjoy it. :)

Does anyone know what the difference is between the 1992 edition and the new 10th Annv edition of The Artist's Way? I just was looking on amazon and say that you can get the original edition used for cheap cheap cheap. Just wondering. Thanks.

Oh, and I might do the september session. I'm going to take a look at the book first. :)

Although i don't know for sure, i'd think they're probably the same as far as the program goes. It's probably just a re-release. You may be best to get the 92 edition, as that's the one that everyone else who's done the workshop on WC seems to have.

Hi! Im newly registered in here.... Im a beginner at pastels and watercolours... I consider myself to be a creative person - but I lack discipline... I live in Norway and the art classes and communities are few, so when I came in here I felt I'd come to heaven.

I read about the september workshop and thought I would want to sign up for it. First I needed to see if I could get a hold of the book here in Norway, so I looked for it in my Net book store, and they have it - it reminded me of something I had read about once - and believe it or not - its in my bookshelf :-) ... I bought it about 2 years ago - flipped through it and put it away...

Well I thought that was a sign - so sign me up....

If there is an afternoonclass after all - I would prefer it because of the time difference - but if not - I'll join the night class...

Welcome to WC! Ista. :) Yes that sounds like a sign to me. ;) I know you'll enjoy this program. I can relate to the discipline issue very well, it's always been one of my biggest!. Once we begin to understand where problems liks this originate we can begin to work on them. I'm trying to make the schedule as easy as possible for everyone so we'll have to do the time translation and find the best time for you. Llis!! I'm so excited about you joining us! I really enjoyed our previous session! You add a wonderful perspective on so many things. :)

Hi Cheryl

I will love  to participate in the workshop. I have started the book about 4 times. Keep making excuses to stop. Like, the "kids" (four legged kind) need to go out or something equally silly. We travel a bunch so I may not be available for all chats. Is that OK? I am new to WC. Hugs Karen

Welcome to WC! Karen, Lyncheri, and kath. Yes, i agree Lyncheri about September being a good time to start a new project. :) Karen, it's ok if you have to miss the occasional chat. We all have such busy lives these days and these are informal sessions. Goodness knows we don't need additional pressures! Logging into the chat room is easy and when the new password is sent to you i'll include step by step directions. We'll get ya there! ;) Looking forward to it.

I would like to participate in this. I've been doing morning pages regularly since June or so, and it has made an amazing difference in the clarity of my focus on all kinds of things - not just art. I'd like to work through the rest of the book with a support group.

Either Sunday or Tuesday is ok for me, as long as the Tuesday time is after 6:30 or 7 US Pacific time.

Hello Cheryl,

I've tried getting through TAW for two years. Last year in July (when I started lampworking) I picked it up again, and lost my momentum around Chapter 4.

I think working through TAW with a group would help me out in a big way. I hope there's room for one more - please count me in for the September workshop.

Many thanks,

I'm new here, too, but would like to participate in TAW. I work at home, so anyday is good for me. I've had the book for about 5 years, and I'm embarrassed to say, I've never really looked at it. I think I might join Procrastinator's Anonymous......maybe tomorrow. LOL
Anyway, I'm very happy I found this site! Very inspiring, and the people here seem so supportive.

Hi all,

I am also new to this site but I would love to join TAW program for September!! Please sign me up........I have read the book twice and followed the program right to the end the second time around. I LOVE the book! My main problem was committing to the Artist's Dates as I have five kids at home and don't get a lot of time for me. Maybe the group environment is just the encouragement I need. The timezones may be my only problem but where there's a will, there's a way!

Happy Painting,

I'd like to try out the group too. I did the Artist's Way years ago and it helped me a lot. I also did part of the Golden Vein but never made it all the way thru. Right now I need some support from other artists, I feel kind of alone. But I am painting a lot and feel very good about that. The support would be great. Tuesday nights would probably be best for me.

I considered getting this book on recommendation of several friends for a long time, but never felt like the right time. Spotted a copy for $1.47 on Abebooks.com and that said to me, it's time!

I've read the first 2 chapters, now checking out what week 1 is like. Can't decide yet if I want to do it alone or in a group. But really interested to read more from the rest of you.

Hi Striver,

The book The Artist's Way is written by Julia Cameron and is marketed by Pan Books. I'm sure you will find it very useful.
It's actually a 12 week course which helps unblock or refresh your creativity, and so much more. It can be done alone or in a group situation. That will be the purpose of the program starting here in September.....we will work through each week of the course from the book and then meet in a chat forum to discuss it. I think that's what is planned anyways.....

Happy Painting,
Serena :)

Thanks for information, have just checked local library on web and they do have the book. It is Saturday 9.30 pm so will have to wait until Monday to check it out. And if you are a follower, you will be aware of the big match tonight starting shortly. (The All Blacks and that other team if you will excuse me. We know what I mean as we are either side of our little pond. Should be a good match. Catch you later as we say.

Serena, thanks for info, yes a good match and once again at the last moment a penalty is given and the match lost. However I think the other team deserved to win for they always seem to find that extra at the end. A very macho match, ouch.

I can do with all the help I can get at my stage, am awaiting the book from the library, will probably buy it as so many of you seem to rave about it and the library say's it is very popular. I will be sending the password to the TAW chat room to you before we begin, along with the instructions on how to get into the room. It's very easy to do. Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Yes, I am already feeling benefit of striving to do the morning papers, it takes a little effort to form a new habit, and that is what we will be doing. I would not do that immediatley of course but after we all get comfortable and settled in as a group i may have to experience a few absences. We'll be settling on times and i will be sending out the password to the TAW chatroom in the next week.

I would be interested in a Sunday chat time! I have been through the Artist's Way once before, on my own, about 3 years ago. It literally saved my sanity! I think the idea of sharing with others would enhance the experience. Sign me up, please!

Obvious it worked for you, have you kept your morning pages up? I suspect they have slipped by what you don't say. After going through the book and got my MP going I believe that more time weekly is really required than what is suggested. One question I have is the size of MP. I am using A4 lined and average 14-20 mins a page. That's my daily hour gone! Could use a small note page! Then there is affirmations. Rereading and the weekly chores spread out over the week. For me more to it in time than meets the eye, but I am for it.

Hi Everyone,

BirdArtist

Striver.....you're right, the morning pages kind of slipped. I was writing them faithfully for about 2 years. Actually, I ended up writing them in the evening. It was more beneficial for me to unload the day. I would write the happenings of the day, my reactions to them, and any (lots) of emotions about them. I felt that by writing about them, I was anchoring them to the paper, thus exorcising them. I also wrote my affirmations at this time......they were very much needed and seemed to "take hold" better after the day was poured onto the page.

I really didn't adhere too strongly about 3 pages a day. I wrote what I was feeling....some days it was only a half a page....most days (at first) it was 4 to 6 pages! I bought 9x14 hard covered journals to write in. That was my gift to myself....a nicely bound book. I've only recently read what I wrote those first few months. I can't believe the pain I was in. It didin't really seem so at the time, but reading them now..........

I still write, but not as often......it seems that life gets in the way at times. No excuse for not taking care of my Spirit the way I deserve, but I have made so many advancements in that area, too. I forgive myself this lapse.

I am looking forward to doing The Artist's Way again. I think the person will be very different than the one who did it the first time. Healthier, for sure, but still with issues.....some different and some ongoing.

I read TAW the first time with a yellow highlighter.......I guess I'll have to use a green one this time around.

Striver

Yes, I follow you and thank you for sharing, up to now, (about two weeks) I have done my MP first thing in the mornings after brecky and the house has gone quite. All alone am I, ha. This seems to be working out good. I use both sides and the fourth side I fill up with my affirmations. Badly needed I assure you. Today I decided I would get my 20 min walk over imediately after that. Then what ever daily chores needed doing. Have decided to be selfish this way and do what I want first instead of leaving until later, which often doesnt happen. Yes I am a Yes person but have discovered the word NO. Intend to use it more often. Have missed some mornings and tried MP late at night when all have gone to bed. Hoorah. Does not seem the same for me, possibly to bushed out. This seems more my reading time. Guess we need to find out what best suits us. I am looking forward to the start, but so glad I have a little time to read the book, take in what is required. and get a little organised. Nice to meet you.

Hi, I'm new to Wet Canvas and would like to join this group but I started reading and doing Vein of Gold about 3 weeks ago. Does anyone know if there is a group doing that book? I don't think I can use Vein of Gold with TAW and I really want to finish what I started for once.

I thought I would do some pre-reading for the up coming workshop. I have been doing my MP for about 5 days now. Seems to take a lot to fill 3 pages but I am getting it done. As I was reading last night on the negative core I realized that this is a very powerful book. I can see it bring up some very heavy stuff. I was wondering is there any suggestions on self-care as we go....... I have no memories under the age of 16, and I can see this bring up some stuff that may not be to good..........is this what blocks artist........do we keep our sanity.......I do so want to do this......but am a little concerned about the back lash..........maybe I should put a safety net in place before we get started.......color me concerned.........

When I took this workshop long ago, it did bring up "Stuff". After the workshop , I made the decision to find a councillor to sort thru some things. I did. It helped. You might benefit talking to someone about the lost years etc. Good luck.

Like you maxdawn and kelleybee, I had "stuff" I was carrying around. Stuff that was with me my entire life. This book did not "cure" me, but it did lead me to the realization that I was in serious trouble. I worked through the entire book and like I said before, it literally saved my sanity, but..........it was also the catalyst for my finding the help I so needed. I sought help about 3 years ago. I'm working through an obsessive/compulsive disorder and depression. I am doing this with the help of a psychologist who is sensitive to my art and medication-free as of June. I brought TAW to her early in my treatment and asked if the book could have been more harm than good. She gave it back to me two weeks later and said that she purchased three copies for lending to other creatives in her practice. Maybe, maxdawn, syncronicity brought you here in order to take the steps towards healing. By all means, if you feel that this book will bring up some dangerous things, set a support system in place beforehand.

BirdArtist, kelleybee Well I do have a counselor I have been going too for 2 years now. I do suffer from depression, panic and anxiety attacks. So I called her today and asked her to pick up the book. This way I feel she'll know what I am doing. I am so disconnected from feelings most the time I can't identify them when I am having them. Anger I know very well it has been my companion for most of my life. I will do this workshop and I will become a better person for doing it. Unfortunately I no longer have any friends left it is hard to watch someone go through stuff you don't understand, and it is easer just to walk away from them. I understand how they feel, I worked in a shelter for batter women and their children for 10 years and you do see to much of life's pain. This is why I no longer work to much of other peoples stuff bring up your own garbage. I started to do art to unlock my inner doors once this door is open I'll let my creativity take over and help me work through it. I know in my heart of hearts that this is the way I need to go, it feels right, so it is right. Take care of yourselves and each other. I will become the artist I want to be. LOL

Thank you all for bringing this subject up. Think I build a wall around myself for protection from a very early age. I have been likening it to prestressed concrete. Frankly I am afraid to dig into it, its been my strength and harbour of untold fears. I have been wondering how and if I can broach this subject in the course. I think you can imagine the amazement and relief that others have some understanding of this personal feeling.

I am reluctant to discuss this on this page as lets be aware we are broadcasting to the world. This can be deep pesonal stuff.

Part of me says be open and have the strength to do so, there must be so many others. I have now read the book through but am stuck on the first weeks tasks. The wall is sound proof and feels inpenatrable. I tried the write to the editor in my defense. Excuses came forth and suddenly I had jumped back to about five year old clinging to my mothers skirt as someone tried to talk to me. Isolated instances appeared where Iwas put down. So something is working, but I feel I may drag my heels in the course because of the wall.
Catch you later

I have read how to find inner peace and so pass it on, it worked for me so good luck

It is said to find inner peace you should finish the things you have started and left unfinished.

So today I have finished:
1 bottle of vodka, 1 bottle of Jack Daniels, a box of Prosac, a carton of chocolate biscuits, a bucket of ice cream and a box of chocolats.
Only joking of course, perhaps it will help lighten us up.

Hi guys! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back here. Been a crazy week! (good crazy though :)) We will be starting the first of the TAW meetings on Tuesday, Sept.10th at 2:30 pm EST. With another on that evening at 9:00 pm EST. I've added Bird Artist, Mystic, Nicci, Regina, Teddi, Crey, elle, maxdawn and Lady bug to the list! As you can see the list is long. This will be the biggest group of TAW participants to date. With that in mind i think it's a good idea to consider Creys request for a Sunday session too. Since this will be time consuming i will be hosting the first couple of Sundays (to begin on the 15th ... tell me what time is best for you guys!) and will then be asking for volunteers to host Sundays and possibly some of the Tuesday sessions as well. It's not very difficult as you will see once we get underway. The object is to do the reading and excercises and basically just chat about it! There's not much more to worry about as far as leading the group. Just be there and talk. :) We will discuss the chapter and what we got out of it and be there for one another as we work through the program. Sometimes we'll share exciting news about new ways of looking at things such as responsibilities and learning to treat ourselves better and sometimes we'll vent a little about the things that make being an artist difficult. Either way there will be people who are going through the same thing to share with. This is what makes doing this in a group so beneficial. We begin to understand that it's perfetly normal to feel overwhelmed at times. My suggestion for those who will help me out with hosting is simple. As you read the chapter make notes or circle the things in the book that really hit home with you. Some of the quotes on the sides of the pages are really great! :D Start your discussion with those things and it gets the ball rolling. Others will follow and discuss what THEY found to be important. It's a good idea to imagine that we're all sitting around in really comfy chairs in the same room. :) I come away from each meeting feeling so energized! The Tuesday afternoon session, the Tuesday evening session and the third session which will be on the Sunday AFTER these will all be regarding the same chapter but please feel free to pop into any or all of them if you wish because the conversations take different turns with each group. I will be sending the password to the room and instructions on how to enter to each of you this week.
Max, i can understand your apprehension and i think it's wise of you. However my suggestion would be to read the chapter, do the excercises and morning pages and if you have any discomfort over what you're feeling discuss it with your councelor. It's a great idea to have her read this book!
For now lets read the first chapter and if you haven't started your morning pages yet you'll want to do that as well! Be 'seeing' all of you soon! :)

Hi Paintfool
Thanks for info, good to have the times and date to start.
Guess EST means Eastern standard time, any idea what that is in New Zealand time or is it the same. Oh and perhaps the date is different as well. Have not been involved in time and date lines so don't know. Apart from going to the airport once to pick someone up on the wrong day because of the date difference. It seems easier to ask on here.

Yes If I can help will do, have warned wife I will be tying up the phone line for a period each week. I will have to learn self defense as well because of that.

Can we get some details about where and how we join the weekly chats? I may be being dense, but I can't seem to figure it out. I also need a clarification on what time/what time zone the specified chat times are.

I'll be on vacation for the first and possibly second weekly chats, but I'll log in if I can from the road.

Also, Cheryl, isn't the East Coast (of the U.S., that is...) still on daylight savings time? Do you mean EST or EDT?

Rose Queen, thanks for the time zone links. It turns out I just missed the "EST" designation in the announcement post. I'm all clear now.

However, I'm still confused about where the chat takes place...at the main Artist's Way Forum page, I can see a chat room listed, but can't figure out how to enter it. It is just disabled at the moment, beause it is not active? Is this the right place? I'm on a Mac, and want to test my ability to use the chat feature - some chat rooms don't work correctly for me.

I actually work at Apple Computer, believe it or not. It is very embarrassing to admit I don't understand how to do this.

OK guys, here are step by step directions on how to enter the TAW chat room. You'll have to enter the main chat room first. At the top of this page you'll see the drop down menu that says 'Community'. In that menu you'll see the one that says "Chat in the Cafe' click on there. :) But here's a cheat link for you: http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Chat/
This will take you to the chat room log on page. All the way at the bottom of that page you'll see where it asks for your username and your password. This is your personal password, the same one that you use to log on to WC! Once you've typed that in you simply hit the button that says 'log on to the Cafe'. It can sometimes take a minute or two so be patient but it will take you to the main room. Once you're in there you'll want to go to the TAW room. To do this you'll want to hit the tab on the right that says 'ROOMS' you'll see a list of rooms and just click on the one that says 'The Artists Way and hit 'Enter'. A pop up menu will ask for your password. This is where you type in the password that i'll be sending you. Then just hit 'OK' and you're in. It's really simple. TAW times are Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 pm EDT, Tuesday evening at 9:00 EDT and Sunday evenings at 9:00 EDT. See ya then! I hope you are all doing your morning pages :)!!!

Hi
Ok we start on a Tuesaday in the chat room, I am interested to hear if these times we all meet are the only times we can use the room? Or is it available for whoever wants to chat about the course at other times?

Some asked if a transcript would be available to download, I can imagine parts of our discussion will be of interest in the hard copy, is that possible? I believe this thread will continue outside of course set times. This thread is alive to whoever is interested to look in worldwide. The chat room (which is more private) may end up with personal disclosures that some will prefer to keep to the course members only, who we imagine are very much in the same boat. We will obviously have two lines of communication open. This thread and the chat room. Am I right?

This course and particularly the morning pages as a very personal development. I find that I am able to open up more in my mp knowing that no one else will know what I have written, unless I disclose. And of course we can send private messages to those we wish once we have established confidence in them. Roll on the start. Oh , any idea how long we should expect to spend overall. A time limit seems a good and bad idea?
Thank you paintfool

Hello! I heard about the fall TAW group starting up so I thought I would come over and say Hello! I started TAW back in August of 2001 and finished it in April 2002. I have Vein of Gold and tried to start it but have some major resistance about doing the daily walks. It just seems unrealistic to me to be outside walking every day when the weather is so changeable. Like I can't imagine myself out walking in the sweltering humid heat or when it storms for 3 days straight or in the winter with ice and sub zero temps.

So I am going to work through TAW one more time.

Welcome Jillie Beads and anasazizsudios! I've sent the password to you. Yes Striver it's certainly a good idea to share some of our thoughts about the program here in this forum. There are people out there doing this program along with us that cannot make it to the chat sessions and i'm sure they'll benefit from reading the posts and adding thier thoughts to them. :) The TAW chat room is a permanent room and always available for any of us to use. If you decide to have an impromptu get together in there go right on ahead! The chat logs are not available to the general public but if we feel that there's some that would benefit those who have to miss a particularly interesting session i'm sure we can arrange to have it pulled up from the archives. IN the past we have kept the chats at somewhere around one hour. Often there are some of us who linger a bit longer if we really have a lot to discuss. :) With a group as large as this that may happen a few times! :D This is your forum and your chat room... use it as you need to! :)
Ana, (yep, i'll be shortening anasizistudio lol!) i have the vein of gold too but haven't read it. There have been others here who have expressed an interest in that program. Maybe once we're through our 12 weeks on TAW we can explore that one!

Re walking, with all that about you I do not blame you for not walking. However apart from the clean fresh air, hot or cold, do you have an alternative? Some people walk around Shopping malls, car parks and even join fitness clubs and just do circuits of walking at varying paces. Have a look around and see if you have an alternative.

Do you think that the chat room will work this time? Because I tried to go in there anyway (even though it was cancelled) and it would not allow me in. I am wondering if there is a limit on how many can go into it? Often these programs do have limits on what they can handle?

Do we know if that is true or how many can be in a room at once?

Just curious of course and I can't wait!

There are no limits on the number of people in chat. What did it do when you tried to log on? Unfortunatley every once in a while the system will boot someone out (we don't really know why) but it's not that common and it's usually after you've been in there for a while.

It just wouldn't load up, we tried it on 3 different computers too, so we are pretty sure it wasn't something on my own. I figured it just wasn't working for the moment. It was that Tuesday.

Anyway I can get into it now, and hopefully it will work on Sunday if I can make it, if not Tuesday for sure!

Thanks
Laura

TAW workshop will begin on Sunday evening, 9:00 pm. Several of you have asked for the password but do not have your private message system available to me. If you look under one of your posts and do not see the button for PM you may want to change this in your options (hit the 'My WC') button on the top of this page and then click on options. If you do not care to do so and would like the password please e-mail me at paintfool@alltel.net

The reason for the room being password protected is simply so that we can have our chat time without too many interuptions. Looking forward to it. :)

I can't wait for the the chat. I just got back for m a week in Hawaii where I devoured the book (for the second time!) so I'm poised and ready!

I just enabled my PM so I need the password.

What time zone is the Sunday 9:00pm chat in??

Here's my latest work while in the zone in Hawaii after re-reading TAW
