I did this study today..I wanted to really emphasize realism mixed with impressionism, and creating those lost edges..I think this is the hardest thing to explain to my students, so i did this demo to really push it , to show where i create soft and hard edges..http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-Feb-2008/118892-IMG_1092.JPG

Beautiful. If I am ever in California I know who I am going to visit for a workshop. :D

Wow, this looks way more like a finished piece than a demo/study to me! The lost and soft edges really help to focus our eyes on the harder ones, and to draw our attention to where you want it.

Alicia, this is such a good lesson for all of us, portrait people and landscape people. It's hard for me to put into words the effect of those lost edges - they draw you into the picture, add a sense of mystery and give the viewer something to do other than quickly take in a finished painting. I love it when I have to work a little at seeing a painting and figure out for myself where the edges meet etc. I wish I understood more about this effect so I could put it to good use in my landscapes. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful painting with us!

Love it Alicia. Hate the fact it is 80 degrees now that I left! Love the shadow over the eyes. Put it in the show. It is so much more than a study.

I want to show how i repeat the flesh colors into the background.also notice
how there is not much info on the right side of her mouth,,it is lost into
the shadow.Only a few areas of her hair are defined. If you squint your eyes at a subject (really really really squint) the areas where the values are hard
to deferentiate (SP?)i.e. between her hair and ears,, you loose those edges.
also i.e. her mouth in the shadow area. Thanks everyone for such nice comments:heart:   http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/28-Feb-2008/118892-IMG_1088.JPG

Alicia, I know this was a study on the edges, but I just think that the lips are amazing. They are so beautiful as is the whole painting.

St. Patrick's Day is a ways off, but I'm prematurely green...with envy. I find this absolutely stunning. If there is a particular portrait style I would like to emulate, or at least strive toward, it's yours. I'm off on a quest to find those demos you talked about. Thanks for posting this (and the others)!

Are the lips just your non-color Nupastels colors? I find mine looking too lipsticky while yours are so natural?

AliciaS
03-01-2008, 04:48 PM
Hi Anne..yes they are mostly "non-colors" neutral flesh tones.top lip is cooler and darker...but the bottom lip as it comes out of the shadow and toward the light is a warmer red,,and some pinks..I also used a little of the 353-color to bring out the seperation in the lips and in the corners..hope that helps..

Very helpful. Thanks. I will cool down my top lips and see if that helps. I apparently learned a lot as things are going much better post-workshop!

Wonderful work Alicia...I just saw this and I love the study. I haven't yet had a chance to look AND finish the painting we were working on at your workshop...I am hoping this weekend. This just reinforces my desire to sit still for a bit and look it over and play with it. I'm with Anne, her skin is so perfect!
