First, does anyone have experience with the Coit pen (http://www.coitpens.com/) or the Automatic pen (http://www.automaticpens.co.uk/)? Which is preferred?
Second, any thoughts on use of one of these pens vs. a flat brush?

I would consider Colt as specialised Automatic Pen. One is not better than the other, entirely depends on what you want to do, Try one of each see which suit your style.
For traditional English Calligraphy a Flat pen is far easier to control than a Flat brush.

Thanks. I know they have differing design, but don't they do essentially the same thing?

Some do but some Coit pens have cut outs to give muliple lines etc, similar to the Mitchell
scroll nibs for smaller letters.
