Yep -- I'm a newbie, but I thought I ought to jump in somewhere. :D

This one's a 4x4 footer. Acrylics and coffee grounds on masonite. C&C welcome.

Very cool. Love the sense of light and texture. Intriguing piece and title.

Thanks! I'm not sure if I should post some close-ups of it or not. I figured with a place as hoppin' as WC, I'd just wait to see if I got lost in the shuffle or not. ;)

Hey, thanks for the welcomes everyone! :D

As for the use of coffee grounds, well, that's a silly story. I was in college and strapped for cash [goes without saying, really doesn't it?] so I decided to use something I had in abundance for texture. Basically I mix in used coffee with a big ol' glop of Utrecht gloss gel, and then add water until it's fairly spreadable. It looks like a huge mess until it's dry, and it *can* slightly muddy the color, but I find I really like the grittiness of it. Here's a look at some of it up close:

Granted, I've painted over it somewhat, but you can see how it catches the paint on all the little gritty peaks. :D

And here's a closer shot of the crow:

All the dark little specks are the coffee grounds.

Thanks for taking a look!

Wow, those crops are amazing in their own right. Very innovative using coffee grounds. I wonder about the acidity having an effect on the painting in the future.

I dunno if the post-slurping java specks will fry the painting later. Honestly, I tend to think "Hey, they're smooshed in a big plastic sandwich of acrylics -- they'll last forever, just like trashbags in a landfill!" :D

Of course, I could be totally wrong. But I'm okay with that. ;)

Good for you. This is an exciting, beautiful, innovative painting. I like the thought that the coffee grounds are encased in plastic, so what's the worry.

You have the right attitude to sally forth and produce more exciting work.

That is a fantastic piece. One of the more exciting ones I've seen lately - so much energy it practically moves.

Bravo.

Thanks for the positive remarks guys [and gals!] ;)

It's been a while since I've had the feedback of other artists, and I was starting to get very uncertain of myself -- in the sense that I felt like I'd been producing stuff in a vacuum completely devoid of constructive input.

Ahh, nothing quite like a little ego massage to go with the morning coffee. :D

If you folks keep up all this positive-talk I'm gonna get gutsy enough to start posting my stuff in the structured critiques area!

Thanks again!

This is terrific! Welcome aboard. This would make a wonderful book cover for some Scifi/Fantasy novel - Charles DeLint perhaps, on for "The Crow"? Keep up the work and hang around here. Lots of good feedback and keeps us all working better.
