Ok, I have showed most of my first paintings, now, this is one I have just started. (I still have a good bit more painting to do) I am doing this from the hawk photo that I drew in pen that is posted in the pen and ink forum. I am in unfamiliar territory, as I am with all my paintings since I am new to this. Ok, I want realism and somehow, I am going to figure this out. So far the right wing, (wich would be the viewers left) is looking fairly good, somewhat relistic, (sorry, but it was raining and getting dark, so I had to take the photo inside, so it was not very good for natural lighting.)

I think its looking great so far. We had 3 hawks in the backyard a couple of days ago. They like to sit on top of the swing/playset and check things out. Beautiful birds.

You doing great. Just keep painting until you think you're done. Put it away for a couple of days...pull it out again and see if anything jumps out at you for tweeking. At least that's how I tackle it. Anyway, relax and enjoy the process. Trust your instincts. You've definitely got some natural talent. I really like the warm light on the bird, especially combined with the deep browns and blue sky.

So far it is looking good! The hawk is well drawn. You have captured those keen eyes well.

Only real suggestion is to think about getting rid of the branch on the right. I find it distracting the way it seems to protrude from the hawks back. You might even consider moving the branch down into the lower right corner to support the composition there. Remember, painters use photos for reference. Copiers...well they copy the good and the bad.

I agree with Bill, the branch coming out of the back of the hawk has to go.
We have a lot of red tail hawks in my neck of the desert. They are so beautiful, and you have done a wonderful job. Can't wait to see your progress. Colleen

I think its looking really good at this point. You may want to x-post in the wildlife section for better critiques on the subject and more specific help

Thanks everyone!
Good Idea with the branch. I don't know why I put that there, but thats how I drew it originally in pen and I was using my drawing as the reference, and the photo for color. In the actual photo the branch is down on the right. If you ever look at my website you will see the actual photo.
Thanks for the compliments and critiques, and I will be fixing that.

Wow! What a majestic bird, Michael. I do agree with Bill about the branch protruding from his back, it adds nothing to this painting. I look forward to your finale!! I also agree you should cross post in Animals and Wildlife. You certainly have a lot of artistic talent.
