This is my first time posting a WIP, so bare with me. I haven't painted in a while so I thought i'd get back in the swing of things with a fun painting of my boyfriend and I. Doesn't he look so happy? (He secretly loves my kisses). Its 11X15.

Heres the reference:

And here is my slow start. The outline then just the first layer on the background. I really need invest in a larger brush so my wash doesn't have so many strokes in it.

I like to do really detailed outlines and what not. Its a slow start, but if you saw my working environment you'd understand
Ill keep you all updated when I make progress!

Your drawing is very good, looks just like the reference photo.

Try wetting your background a section at a time and dropping in the paint to let it flow around the wet area rather than applying it with such a small brush. You can tilt your paper to help the paint flow where you want on the wet paper.

 HI! Susan, Cute expressive photo to work with, off to a good start, like the exaggerations! Looking foward to seeing your progression.

wow- your drawing is fabulous.... the picture is hysterical... reminds me of our cats when the basset hound 'kisses' them...

Wow thank you all for your wonderful encouragement. Painterbear, thanks for the hint. I tried it out and got a much better result!

I've only just added another layer onto the background, so not really worth posting. Once I head to the actual subjects ill put up another pic. It's slow work but I can't wait to see his face when I give it to him. Thanks again!

Oh boy, you've sure cut out your work for yourself! Great drawing so far. LOL at his expression. I'm pulling up a chair to observe.

Okay so here are some more updates. Yesterday I went over the background again, using the tip from painterbear, and im much much more satisfied. As I near the finish I'll go back in and add some different colors in, but for now I have the texture and color I'm looking for. The second pic shows what I did today. I went in and did a basic layout of shapes and colors. The first layer of skin is to orange for my taste. We both of pinker complextions so ill be trying to incorporate more of that in the next few layers. My hair is still very basic. The one pic makes it look really purple, so I had to scan a close up so you can see the color better. My hair (the ref. makes it look brown) was actually deep auburn color at the time. I worked on his shirt. I did his necklace. I really like the way the necklace turned out. I'll have to get some better pics for that. Okay enough rambling!

This is a kick to watch. Always fun to see something different, and you've captured the expressions with your drawings.

Now, as everyone knows---I don't do portraits and cant draw, that said, I know many folks around here do both and I would like to see some of them advise you on the thickness of your neck in the painting. ???? Since the paint went on it looks..to wide from left to right, but I don't know how to advise you....

Nice start. I'm anxious to see more. I see what hpthecat means about the necks but as I share the same complaint about not drawing as well as I'd like and not doing portraits, I'm not the one to advise you. Maybe someone with more portrait/drawing experience can tell us if we're on track on not.

Okay...just so you don't think I've been slacking...I sat down for a couple hours tonight and got some serious work done. I found a skin tone I'm happy with...and applied it to both of us. Then I focused mainly on Nick. I fixed his necklace because I forgot a part on it...and I extended his shoulder a bit to correct my neck. (You guys were right it just was to thick..I hope that looks better) I need to go back through there and even the tone out though. I had fun getting his five o'clock shadow looking right. He is -never- clean shaven. Always itchy.. ...anyways. I went over the edges of his hair to soften it up, but I actually like th way it is right now. Not to over done...but idk. I'm also very plase with house his nose and ear came out. Two of my weeker points. Overal I'm very satisfied with where he is at right now. I just need to go back through and add a few more highlights and shadows. But ill save that till I finish me:confused: ...that just sonds odd. Doing his neck and chin was terrible. I could never get the lines right. I took a risk with such an intense shadow but I love it. So there thats my rambling. Again thank you all! Your wonderful comments and critiques are such a great help. Hope you enjoy the progress.!

I would lift that red off his lips, you don't want him to look like he is wearing lipstick. I use a wash of burnt sienna for lips.

They are a bit red...next time I get a chance to work on this I'll go back over them and see if I can't lighten them up a bit. Thank you!

Well here is my latest effort towards this. I'm very please with how I came out. It's awkward painting myself. I changed up the hair a little bit, but I think it looks better. It kinda broke up the big space of my oversized cheek/jawline that I have been blessed with. I lightened up nick's lips too, no more lipstick lips! and If fixed the shadow on his shirt beneath my chin. I just have to go back now...do some little touchups, and go back over the background. I think I'm going to paint in some lyrics from what I consider "our song." Its cheesy but I think it'll be cute too. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!! Thanks for looking!

Susan this is looking really good. I am glad you lightened his lips, they look so much more realistic now..

Thank you! I'm so glad you like it. I actually just finished it tonight. Unfortunately my batteries died, and there doesn't seem to me a single pair of funtional AA batteries in my entire house. Ill take pics once I pic some up tomarrow and post it. Im giving this to him tomarrow, and im really nervous! I hope if loves it! *crosses fingers*

I just wanted to tell you I think this is such a fun painting! Your expression is like..."..oh I love you so much" and his is like..."..eeww urggh..why are women so mushy?" Ha Ha (hysterical laughter). It really is a story, a heartwarming sweet story :).

Why thank you all. I finally finished it. Yay! I did add the lyrics. There from Plus 44's "Make you Smile"--"If I could, I'd only want to make you smile....If you were to stay with me awhile." I really am proud of this. This painting holds a lot of firsts for me. Its my first time painting since July. This my first time painting people in watercolor period. Its my first time doing anything with myself as one of the subjects. And its the first time I've been so nervous showing this to someone. I didn't get to give it to him today. So I just am so nervous of what he'll think. It's all framed and wrapped. Ready to give. Gah I can't stand the wait. Anyways. Thank you all for sticking with me. Here it is!

The complete work then some close ups so you can see all the little details. I really hope you enjoy! And thank you again!

Well done, Susan. He should love it, hopefully as much as you loved painting it.

I like the addition of the lyrics also. :D

Thank you all! I gave it to him today and he absolutely loved it. His first words were "Awww no way!" He hung up right away all proud and stuff. Then he goes.."Well you couldn't have picked like a nicer look for my face?" and he grinned. I'm so happy that he liked it. My nerves have been quelled. Thanks again for all of you sticking with it!
