Beautifully illustrated. What size might this be and on what surface please?

while I am sure there is more that could be done, for the life of me, I am not sure I could find it.

hi it is done on a prepared mdf board, painted with a few coats of gesso, it is just a bit larger than the actual dogs head in life... have not measured it... I am applying some foreground to it at the moment, some dead bracken, to make sense of the background, and the dog itself id as yet unfinished... thank you for the comments... I hope to learn a bunch from being on here... HP

Welcome to the forum Paul.
If this isn't finished, I'm waiting in awe at what will follow. Those eyes have such depth to them.

I was on my way up to my studio to work on my dog painting and I am now asking myself - why bother. This is amazing and you aren't finished??

Welcome!

Welcome to the forum  lovely painting. I am astonished at the way you have achieved such a glossy coat and a black coat at that. I hope the head isn't going to float like that when you are finished, it looks kind of creepy  ;)

This is so amazing! I love the detail of the mud on the dog's nose :) I have a black lab and he almost always has mud on his nose! haha. A beautiful painting indeed.

lol... no the dog is going to be set, in a dead bracken fore, to balance with the back.... I didnt use any black on the dog at all and mixed my darks from, various colours, I was going for a liquorice type greeny brown black, that you cant see too well on here due to the pic... I layered it up over many visits.. again thanks for the comments... HP

Neat-O. I love the finish you are getting on the fur. Like Lady Carol, the "floating head" really caught me off guard. But now that I know it won't be floating, I think I like the concept of a floating head, especially with the "Jetsons" type background (which only comes across as that now because of the temporary floating head!). I realize that you aren't finished but I may have to steal this idea. Anyway, I digress. This is wonderfully executed. Very much "alive", which is often hard to achieve with animals. Good work.

Welcome Paul: Very realistic painting on every detail including the slightly over tensioned collar and the shadows. I like your use of the out of focus background.

Wow is going to be the first thought of anyone that looks at this..great job so far..Small thing ..the fur around the eyes seems to be a bit more realistic than the fur at the throat..Shine not quite as fine or something..
Super !!

I, weirdly, like the 'floating' look... but I've never been called normal. heh

All I have to say is.... Whoa.... Damn... Amazing work...

Do you find the smoothness of the MDF gives you better control on your brush strokes for the dog? I really like working on stretched canvas, but dislike the 'bumps' when I'm working on detail like this...

fairly new to the painting lark... no training except through reading books, and then trying out things.... messed around with gouache, then gave acrylics a bash and was off, you cant go wrong with them, was always able to draw, and have always been an animal obsessive... so naturally that is the way I went with the painting... im an actor in real life, and at the moment spend evenings in mamma mia in london... this comes to an end for me in march after a very long run... cant wait... am going to paint my fingers to bloody stubs.. Paul, this is stunning. What more can anyone say. The detail is out of this world. If you are looking for any criticism, what is there to criticize? I could search until I go blind and not find anything.

Wonderful black lab, with good highlights and great darks. How in heavens name did you get a full screen image past the powers that be who insist on a mere 500 pixels?

Great dog.

I'm waiting to see how this could be any better, if you treat your dog like you've treated this painting, he must be the most pampered dog in the world. The sheen on the dogs realistic looking fur is so well done, it almost looks like a phot and I'd have thought so if you hadn't indicated it was a painting!
