So join me again this year in doing a Valentine. This year you pick what you want to do or do your take on the painting below by Velaquez.
Draw or paint or use the tools & supplies you have to create.
Keep your work representaional of Valentines.

But don't post your finished Valentines until Feb 13Th.

Then we can all post them together. Sound like fun? I hope you will enjoy yourself! Looking forward to seeing what everyone will do!

Hi June, Lori, Azulparsnip! Happy Valentines :)

Azulparsnip, on the Velazquez, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal by Matthew Gurewitsch on the Rokeby Venus.
According to those who know, the original red of the drape was redder and the coverlet deep purple.
I think I am going to go for those more original colors but still mantain a limited palette.

I found another painting too some people may want to do for a Valentines.

Guess who?

and a little music for the romantic
Elvis singing "Puppet on a String"

aw, shucks, my printer made the colors sooo different than than and I've already started painting ...........I've learned a lesson.
I copied the Elvis. Maybe I'll get a line drawing done . He was one wonderful guy.

Venus at her Mirror
16"x20" Oil on canvas. The canvas is glued onto hardwood.
The day I've been waiting for! I had so much fun doing this project, probably because it was such a challange for me. I've never tried a nude before. I tried to use a fairly basic palette White, Cad red, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue umber, burnt sienna and black. I wanted to use the colors the Valezquez might have used, but when I looked on the net it said he only used three colors white, red and black.

I'm anxious to see what the rest of you have done!

Lori, your skin tones are really, really great! And you did really nice with the modeling of the drapes and coverlet. Very pretty!

I used acrylics, on paper so the blending didn't go as smooth as I would have liked so just went with the haha flow.

10 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches

Wc is still running slow but let's see if Elvis is in the place :D

Nickel, I really like your Elvis, he's great! You really captured his cool, pouty look!
Did you use a limited palette for venus like you planned? If so, what colors did you use?

Happy Valentine Susan! I like the red background and believe me those are some sweet looking lips on your Elvis! Here him say, oh baby!

Hi Lori, I meant to ask you how you feel about painting a nude since she was your first. Sometimes I have mixed feelings about it after I've finished one.
The colors I used, cad yellow, cad red, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, ultramarine violet, titanium white.

Lori - your Venus is beautiful, warm and soothing

Nickel - all of energy in the Venus, the reflection is deep and looks like a center of the true reality somehow......dynamic interpretation. Your elvis is enviable

Tyree - you got the head angle right and the mouth/nose relationship is really good

Here's my Elvis, I did last night..........I go to finish the Venus .....I'm off work today,....I'll post it this afternoon.......

Have a happy Valentines, friends.

there must have been a computer up date installed and now I can't get the photo shop to adjust the file like I used too so this attachment doesn't download .........sigh....

02-14-2008, 01:13 PM
Here's my kitschy-cutesy cliche for Valentine's day. (try saying that after a glass of wine).

Its similar I think to the Victorian valentine's which featured kittens a lot. I thought of my kitten Henry whilst painting...he was with me many years ago...probably over 20 years ago. Maybe the valentine card is for him.

Pen for sketch and gouache for final painting.

02-14-2008, 02:28 PM
Oh June, what a pretty, pretty Kitty Henry  lovey Valentine! So sweet and very victorian too!   I love him   I love the pink toenails :D

Azulparsnip, I went looking for help. Karyn helped me and Charlie's Mum helped change the file so I could post your Elvis here for you. Let me know if you still have trouble uploading files.

Here's Azulparsnips Elvis

He's a hunk !!!!!! I love his attitude! Rock on baby!

02-14-2008, 07:24 PM
Nickel - thanks for adjusting that file. The problem is with this computer..maybe the file was too detailed with all the lines????
It handled the Venus just fine... so here it is.

June - the kitten is adorable....amazing how 3D it is

02-14-2008, 07:25 PM
humpf, I'm jiggered........

02-14-2008, 08:56 PM
June, that is a very cute kitten, sounds like you miss henry!

Azulparsnip, your Venus has a great bod! Elvis looks so cool with that collar.

Nickel, I didn't mind doing the venus, it might be different if I were to do someone from real life, not sure, she is after all, over 400 years old!
When I posted my comments last time the whole thing did'nt come through, I've been having so much trouble with the slow, snail speed dial up we have here and I keep getting disconnected. I just wanted to say about your Venus is that the painting as a whole gives off a lot of energy, I like that.

02-14-2008, 10:13 PM
humpf, I'm jiggered........

Azulparsnip make sure the files are inder 100k and also preferably a jpeg or gif

Right now it opens like a pdf document and I don't have software to change the pdf file to a jpeg.

But I did see her........I like the colors relationships

02-14-2008, 10:54 PM
Lori it maynot be all dial up because Wetcanvas has been slow the last few weeks; the programers are working to speed it up. Getting disconnected is a bummer. Lol, you made me laugh saying this gal is 400 years plus, hehe, I quess I shouldn't complain :) I still really like your skin tones, really nice blending. I hope you will join us again in a little group fun. I don't know exactly what we are going to do next. I've been thinking of painting a Leprechaun and a waterfall and an unicorn. Maybe some Easter Eggs. Another mermaid and so on................ June and I have a large list of things lined up.

02-15-2008, 02:21 AM
Hi Lori, nickel, azul, and tyree. I love all the venuses and elvises!! I must admit to being an elvis fan...how can a guy look so 'beautiful'?? Plus a great singer too.

Some fantasy elves and leprechauns etc for St Patrick's day would be fun nickel.

June, Lol, males are always the prettier sex  not fair, but then it's a good thing cause I'm more in to kissing men and do like what I kiss to look good

I'm cleaning house. Really, lol, getting ready to move my easel and get the benefit of a new light. It's not a big easel, but have to make it some room. I hope to be finished by April. I'm slow. :cat: And I get distracted too!:p

Now let me tell you I did some reading on unicorns. Very interesting for something that may or may not be a real animal. That's right, I said may or may not be real. Just like fairies and leprechauns and mermaids too. Remember that big golden boar from last Feb?

Hope you all have a great weekend!

02-17-2008, 12:41 PM
okay, here she is again in jpeg.......I much prefer the original colors. My printer pulled a fast on on me.......and here is a print card I did.

02-19-2008, 08:39 PM
Azulparsnip these colors look good! I like the skin tones and the coverlet, you did really good! I'd like to know more about the hand. What's in the plam? It looks like a heart.

02-20-2008, 02:38 AM
Azul, your Venus looks great. Love the hand with a heart in its palm.
