jolie

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Mixed Media Experimentation
Project Leader: jolie
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Mixed Media
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

After several discussions about experimental techniques it seemed time to start a project. Let's get our creative juices flowing and start digging through our kitchens, gardens, junk drawers, etc for experimental tools and mediums. There are very few rules for this project, as I'd like it to be an opportunity to open our minds and use unusual items in creating our art.

1. Any support is fine, but it has to be a flat
surface such as paper, canvas, art board, etc.
2. At least one of your mediums must be a
non-traditional medium, such as salt, window
cleaner, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, etc.
3. It should also use at least one found item,
such as shells, string, twigs, candy wrappers,
etc. the item does not necessarily have to be
part of the finished piece, but perhaps used
to create effects in the piece. for example,
impressing string into gesso and removing it
when dry.
4. any media is acceptable, but overall, what
i'm looking for is creative thinking to
create art. i want to see how non-traditional
supplies and methods react with our paints,
surfaces, etc to create exciting art.
5. for ideas to get started you might browse
the recent posts in the mixed media forum.

The Icon for this project is a Mixed Media experimental painting by Carly Clements. All right reserved. It is not a reference image.

for getting a new project underway! Hope everyone will get creative with your experimentation and join us.

One of my fun experimental techniques is using plastic bubble wrap to create interesting textures and shapes in the paint while its still wet. I lay it on...press it down gently with a heavy book and allow it to dry...then remove it! Afterwards, you can paint around the bubble shapes with a negative color to push some of the elements forward even more!

I'm in too :)

I like painting on plastic wrap (Cling type) to make water.:D

I like to drip cascade rinse-aid into my wet acrylic paints, it make the paint bubble and spread much the same as acrylic flow release does. you can get some really neat effects.

I am also a fan of using the plastic baggie or saran wrap into my paint to make designs and textures.

Also like to use vaselline as a resist to create a peeling and aged paint look.

those are mine! can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!
take care

carly,

thanks for sorting out the problem with the project. it was my first time posting one and i'm rather excited about it.

teanne,

i've used plastic wrap over wet paint and gesso, but haven't left it as part of my finished work. i'll have to give that a try some time. would love to see posts of anything you've used the technique on.

claudine,

i'm familiar with your work and have always been very impressed by it. i've never heard of using vaseline, so i'm glad we've had all these interesting threads and a new project. i have a feeling we are all going to learn a lot through experimentation. you wouldn't believe all the things i bought this past weekend to try in some of my art. i have no clue what any of it will do, as i haven't tried it yet, but i'm optimistic.

for anyone else thinking about doing this project, you may want to read the threads from the past few weeks if you haven't already. we have been discussing unusual materials and techniques, so the forum is full of good ideas and lots of talented people to inspire you. now i'm off to paint and have fun, fun, fun!!!

this is my first time participating in a project. i've posted 2 new entries, but am unsure if i have to let others interested in the project know somehow, or if we get notices much like when there is a post to threads we participate in. can someone clue me in on the process of entering and participating correctly in projects?

thanks!

I just went to look at the final entries. (There are four of them, so far.) Nice work people. Thanks for the detailed step by step, jolie. More grist for the mill. Hoping to have something done in the nexrt couple of weeks, but I'm working on 2 swaps from Yahoo groups, and getting ready to go to Conneticut for 4 days next week. And it's about 150 degrees (Farenheit) in my attic studio. I think my paper's melting.

hi guys...i'm always happy when this thread gets resurfaced because it reminds me it's time to start experimenting again. i haven't taken my mary todd beam book out in a while, but i just discovered yesterday that she has a workshop coming up in tuscany next year. i definately have to get some info on that!

if you haven't already, you might want to check out tamana's work (she usually hangs out in the abstract forum), but has a few posts in here. she is THE goddess of experimentation! somehow she manages to find inspiration all around her and it ends up in her work. i've been meaning to try a bit of that again myself.

i'm looking forward to what you come up with! by the way, mary todd beam has a video out now too. i don't know anyone who has it and i haven't found it in the uk, but it's definately on my wish list. now if only ann baldwin would write a book and do a video! lol
