View Full Version : December Sunrise

I saw the most beautiful sunrise a few weeks ago but of course I couldn't do it justice. The photo didn't capture all the subtle shifts from orange to pink so I tried my best to remember it. This is on Rives BFK paper with a coating of black gesso - no pumice. Since I don't have too many oranges and bright pinks I had to make do. I'm not used to doing anything this "loud" but it really was intensely colorful. 11x19 C&C welcome.

Yikes Donna!
It's absolutely beautiful. I wish I could be as free with color as you are on this one. Great values . . . love the shadowed field. This is very evocative. I feel like I am there.

Looks great :) has a watercolor wet-on-wet effect in the sky. Those intensely colorful skies are hard to paint, there is always that one color that can't be found or substituted.

Oh, Donna, this is lovely. I was driving back from Illinois this morning and stormy weather was moving in. The sunrise was vivid. I thought even if I could paint it no one would believe it. You have captured this one so well. The silhouetted (sp?) land is perfect.

You guys are all so nice. This is so out of my league but I had to try it. I need to get more bright colors that are close in value for this kind of thing.

David: Thanks, I don't usually use such bold colors. This one glows in the dark!

WC: Thank you, I had a hard time trying to layer a Mount Vision over a Great American. I have so few bright colors that I had to really grind the Mount Vision into the paper to make it stick.

Binkie and Karen: Thanks!

Terry: Thank you! As soon as I took this photo the clouds rolled in and we had rain later in the day. This is the view from my studio (dining room) and it felt like a gift to see such a beautiful start to the day.

Sharon: I'm glad you like the colors. They don't look quite so bold in reality. My computer really seems to amplify the yellows.

Beautiful use of strong glowing colours! You know, I often say to Hubby: "Look at the sunrise/set, it is so gorgeous it can't be painted, nobody'd believe it." Why is it easier to believe in pale sunrises, while the kind of glow you painted is what takes our breath away...

That is why we have those juicy colors in the box!
Vivid sunrises require you to through caution out the window and jump in with the colors! Now that your feet are wet, more, more, more! great job!

Wow! I love it, the sky is just wonderful the colors are beautiful. It looks like something I would see here in Colorado more at dusk, but have seen some in the morning as well, I'd say you did it more than justice.

Wow, Donna, I LOVE these colors!
It gives it a very wild feel with the stripey aspect....reminds me of tropical jungle world....as I look at my striped tiger girl cat on my computer desk, it offers even more of that feel.
Bold is good, it's good! Fun to try new palettes.

Thanks Karen and Cindy- your opinions mean so much. Are you sure this doesn't qualify as guady? I'm really not used to these colors at all.
