Haven't done one of these in ages! But here is what I have of Lola so far. She is a beautiful yellow Lab who belongs to an online friend of mine in So Cal.
I am pretty happy with the background, but hey, if something jumps out, let me know!
It is on velour paper starting with Rembrants. I am also using Geraults, Nupastels, and Schminkes.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/31-Dec-2007/41107-Lola2-2.jpg http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/31-Dec-2007/41107-Lolas_eye-2.jpg

Great start Kate. He looks like a wise old dog!
Just as a little "nitpick," I wonder if the composition would be better if some of background wasn't there. Only because I'm a troublemaker (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/images/smilies/lol5.gif) . . . I tried a crop. What the heck?

Wonderful beginning. I look forward to the finished painting.

Oh this is starting out stunning. Can't wait to sit - like a good dog... and patiently wait for the next "treat".

I agree that this is going to be a beautiful picture.
I don't think you should make any decisions about cropping until you are nearly finished.

Beautiful! Love the bg, it looks like a watercolor.

An update on Lola! The facial structure is starting to take shape and the other eye is almost done. I can see her Therapy Dog tag isn't round enough.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/06-Jan-2008/41107-Lola_update.jpg
The left ear, our right side has more folds and detail than the other!
C&C welcome!

Finished the portrait of Lola! I had an awful time making out the parts of the collar under her chin. Straps and buckles elude me. That is why I paint most of my horses naked!:D
Anyway, if anything jumps out let me know. I always welcome critiques!http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/08-Jan-2008/41107-LOLA-finished3.jpg

That's a great picture! I absolutely love the background and might have to steal that idea in the future! :)

C&C: the therapy dog tag has no highlights, is it flat yellow in real life or is it golden? If it's metallic, you might want to add some highlight in white. Same for the chain it's on, if that's silver chain you might want to add a highlight to indicate that it's metallic.

Good work!

Katherine, this is a fantastic work. I have 3 labs, 2 Lolas and a male. When I looked at the finished there ar two little things I see can make it better.
One is the pink between the nose and the hair right over it, just where the pink on the top ends. It would look nicer if it blends a bit, kind of looks like its another part of the body but it actually blends with the hairs.
Two is just a tini bit of more shadow right under her mouth, where it already has a bit of black but at first it needs more definition to show that the mouth is not that big or that the hairs are not a bear I hope I made myself understood. If my english was better, maybe you would understand me . I dont know how to work on paintshop or how to put those lines some people use to show us where there is a need for change.
I hate doing this, I dont like to make you feel Im a "know it all", as a matter of fact, i kind of think twice before i make any comments, I only comment when I feel I can help in a humble way. I really appreciate when things are pointed to me, I sometimes dont see all the little bits myself,
Sorry if you dont like my comments but the only thing im quite sure of myself are yellow labs, they even sleep with me !!.
I havent posted all my lab portraits here.
By the way, love the bg. its my kind of background, lots of colors.

Cece, no! That is fine! Critiquing other's work helps us all to learn to do better. Thanks for pointing out what I didn't see.

Lorene, I think it was a plastic disk. There are no highlights in the ref photo. But the ring it is on could be punched up. Thanks!

And thanks to everyone who took the time to look and comment.
