Happy Christmas everybody!
Just finished this, a portrait of my sisters horse, which she had to sadly part with in the autumn. She has no idea that this is coming, I hope she will like it!
The picture is a bit warped (Its just the camera angle,) its 12 x 16 on pastel paper with karismacolour and caran d'ache supracolour. #Not too happy with the line of rump/leg, but I ran out of time and the horse was not in a good position either. Never mind, live and learn! :cat:

You did a perfect job on the head of the horse. I also love the really realisticly looking chain and headgear. You're right about the rump/leg. It also spotted my eye. The head alone would have been enough. But like you said, live and learn.
I think this is fantastic! I love the colors you used for the horse's coat - it looks so smooth and realistic. Can you explain why you aren't happy with the link of the rump/leg? I wouldn't have noticed anything wrong.

You do beautiful work. I have really enjoyed seeing your art work, you have a great talent with animals. This one is no exception, your sister will love it. I have found that every painting I do has one part I do not like, but I learn from that for the next one. Now I know I am not alone in that experience. Thanks

thankyou everyone! :0)
The rump is slightly the wrong shape, it looks flat and narrow, it actually looks worse on the photo than in life, so thats why I decided to leave it. I had originally only done the head, but I mada boo boo on the paper and had to extend *oopsie*
Thanks again for all your nice comments!

Your horse looks terrific. I really like the job you did on the head and eyes.
Just as a suggestion, you might try to widen the horses back leg slightly to show more muscle on his flank. I think this will help strengthen his rump. You won't need much just about a fourth to a third of the green backgound area in the lower right hand corner.
You might try to do this in photoshop or PSP first to see how it changes the perpspective.

What colors did you use to do the chain?
Hi Char, I used (long list...) All caran d'ache - orangeish yellow 031, cream 491, cinnamon 055, minky colour? 045, apricot, 041 (odd choice but it worked on my highlights)! white, and lastly, gold 499. I may also have used a smidge of black to darken and the coloursoft petrel grey on the shadows. Also I finished it off with white watercolour direct from the tube. :0)
Sorry the copy is so blurry.......

she'll be thrilled with it!
What a thoughtful gift. She'll love it. Next time if you soften the edge of his back flank it will recede and not bother you so much. Wanda

Thanks for the information, Steph! It is amazing how many colors go into just a chain. How did you know what colors to use? Did you just experiment?
I'm sure your sister will be very touched to recieve this wonderful gift!

I experiment with everything!!!! And not even on a rough piece of paper. It goes straight on. I'm not sure if thats confidence, or utter madness !!!!!

Great Job!
I think that the head is fabulous and I love the eye. I also like the color that you used in the coat---i think i see some greens and eggplant---wonderful.
