View Full Version : My First Portrait - Newbie

I just started painting last winter. I have been lurking for the past month.

I painted a self-portrait (while in a bad mood!) and tore the paper around the nose. My friends tell me it is a good likeness. Half sheet Fabriano, 140, Cotman paints.

Now I am working on a portrait of my mother as a young woman in the 1940s. This is a head study I am doing before I start on the actual painting. Fabriano 140, Cotman.

 HI! Picolo, Self portraits are so hard to do beacuse we look different in a picture than we do in a mirror. Hang in there, you didn't do to badly. Your Mom's is looking good, nice likeness. Welcome and people will be stopping by to help. If you get time head over to the learning zone in watercolor and there are demo's and classes and tips on portraiture. Do well, Regards, Marianne

Great work, I like the idea of stapling the paper to the board.

Mary - thanks for the encouragement!

Tracy- I took a class and the instructor told us to use staples. I didn't know that other people used tape until I read a book. Thanks for the compliment!

That looks like a real good likeness of your mother. Can we see a bigger photo? I want to see more. I'm working on what I'll call my first portrait. Of my older son....

OK, here are some close ups, as well as a photo of myself and the entire photo of my mother sitting in a chair next to a lamp. I am working tighter and tighter and I really want to work looser and looser. I am not sure how to loosen up.../Community/images/19-Dec-2007/122743-Young_Mom_in_chair.gifhttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/19-Dec-2007/122743-Closup-Mom.jpghttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/19-Dec-2007/122743-My-Close-Up.jpghttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/19-Dec-2007/122743-My-photo.jpg
