A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: ONLINE PASTELS POSTCARD PROJ
Project Leader: AriadneArts
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Here is yet another postcard project. This is an online project (those who are interested in “real life” swapping can contact one another individually) in which the DOMINANT MEDIUM must be DRY PASTELS or OIL PASTELS. If you’ve never tried pastels, dive in. Afraid of dust? Try oil pastels. It’s a good idea to keep the format around postcard size in case anyone wants to do a “real life” swap. There’s a fount of information in the Pastel Forum and the Pastel Hall of Fame. I’ve provided some references below. When ready, simply post your card in your own project portfolio, indicate the medium or media used and, if it’s meant for a certain individual, the name of that person (whom you should then PM). It can be for anyone you like, no one in particular or even just for yourself (Gnu gets credit for that last idea). Do as few or as many as you like. Take as long as you like—NO pressure. Most of all, HAVE FUN and learn in the process.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=217)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Absolutely! ANY form of pastel, be it dry, moist, hard, soft, or oil. Watercolor washes, ink outlines, etc. are okay too as long as the PRIMARY medium is some kind of pastel. Hope you join in. :D

Thanks Karen. This one is on Canson Canvas paper. Because it's oil pastels. I find I like the primed surface better--doesn't absorb the color.

And thanks for your nice comments, too, Gnu. Yes the camel is posted. I'm so glad you like him.

I've just joined the project. It will be perfect to practice as I wanted to start again with pastels. Thank you for the idea Ariadne. The size is very little for a pastel, no? It may be difficult to control the paint, but OK I'll try it.

Welcome to the project, Dolors. If the size seems too small, go ahead and make it bigger. Just do what's comfortable and have a good time. I look forward to seeing your pastel work.

Welcome Chris! I was hoping to see you here. So glad you joined. And if the smaller size seems daunting, go ahead and work larger. The postcard size was just a suggestion. This is meant to be fun for everyone. Looking forward to seeing more of your pastel work. (BTW, your swan is beautiful!)

Look at that face! Adorable! With the oil pastels, how do you get a basecoat to cover the canvas before starting? Just use them on their side like regular pastels, or is there a better method?

PS: I don't really know anyone yet, but I joined anyway. This looks like fun!

WELCOME MMDM! So glad you joined in--this is the best way to get to know people here at WC and to let them get to know you.

You can really pretty much use any surface with oil pastels, but I like Canvas paper--it's already primed for use with oils, acrylics, comes in different sized pads and is inexpensive. Canson makes it and I think Strathmore does too. I've also used other papers that I primed first with finely gritted acrylic medium or gritted gesso. And I do use them the same way as dry pastels, that is, on the side at the point (if square) on it's sharp bottom end (if round). As you can see, I like detail, and I AM able to get detail with these. Blending can also be done with your finger (you've got to rub very hard tho), but I like to use colour shapers, especially with the oil pastels. They're the best for blending the oil pastels. I use the tapered nos. 2 and 6 FIRM for the oil pastels. I use the same shape, size for dry pastels, but in the softer version.

Thanks for the lovely comments on my Rhino card and I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work.

Eileen....do you ever use white spirit to blend your oil pastels? I was reading a techniques section in one of my books and it showed a whole series of photos with this being done in an oil pastel drawing...the result was marvelous! The artist used both a rag and a brush dipped in the spirit to achieve different effects.

Karen, I want to go to Morocco soooooooo bad! I'm so dismayed by the Middle East situation. Went to Israel anyway last summer, although there was a lot of tension, especially in the Arab quarter which is what I was most interested in. Morocco is still supposed to be okay, but my hubby worries about me travelling alone there. Whaddaya say, a WC trek to Morocco? Wouldn't that be great? Dolors, you could meet us there. It's just a hop, skip and jump from Spain........sigh.......dream.......sigh.

Yes, I used white spirit on the elephant pic I did for Caron's Africa FND. I guess I could post it here too. It gave it a very matte finish, but that may be due to the paper I used. I should try it on the canvas paper. The matte finish worked for that painting though. Generally, I prefer the brighter, shinier finish I get from the canvas paper.

Going to Morocco? why not, but I'm sure I'm not going during summer, too much hot. I've never been there but I'd love it. We can talk about it in autumn or winter.

Well wouldn't that just be a lovely trip!!! Altho I have to admit...I'm pretty much of a scardy cat when it comes to traveling to places where there's tension  However, I do think it would be fabulous, if at some point several of us could arrange a trip!! How fun! I'm open to discussions! :D

Chris...this is lovely! You said that you thought maybe you didn't blend enough..well to tell you the truth, I rarely blend anything at all!! The two pieces that I have in this forum, I did do a bit of blending on the backgrounds, but I really like being able to see the expressive line work in a piece. Give it a go without blending and see how you like it.

I guess I should have also added to that...I do far less detail in alot of my pieces than the other folks here, so it doesn't take me as long. :D

Ahaaa....Oil Pastels....... I was going to say how the heck did you do this wonderful rhino in pastels. I presume it is easier to do detailed work with the oily sort. I know I am having probs with anything smaller than my finger:D :cat:

I love your stairway and elephant too:clap:

Thank you Chris. But nope, I get good detail in the dry pastels too. Pastel pencils lethally sharpened to the rescue. Or the hard edge of a NuPastel. :D

Orchid, you petulant but loveable thing you, it sure doesn't look like gunk to me. What kind of pastels are you using? If they're very soft, use a light hand. Well, use a light hand anyway. If they're hard, work them like cp's. Light layers.

they're so soft I can hardly hold them!!!! almost desinagrate before my very eyes. Did I hear you say these come in pencil form? that might be better for me. of course I have to wait until I purchase my acyrlics, new frames for my charcoals, a mat cutter to save on framing costs, and oh yes... a new digital camera ... one can always dream. I am now going to try the oil pastels to see if I have better luck with theml.

you guys make this look so easy...
so did Arlene and look where that got me :D

Ooops! Sorry 'bout that. :D But the softness is no doubt the problem. Very soft pastels fill the tooth of the paper very quickly. You can get a set of pencils or NuPastels very reasonably. Use these for your sketches BEFORE the soft pastels(you can also sketch with vine charcoal) and for your detailing OVER the soft pastels. If you go to the oil pastels, use the dreaded cp's for your sketches and details (she said quickly, running for cover). :D

Orchid...first of all..this is absolutely not the worst piece of art I have ever encounterd!!! I like your composition and I love the colors that you've used. It looks like you a using a pretty rough paper surface.....I tend to like the smoother surfaces, altho you can't use as many layers of pastel...they just start falling off! Anyway, you might give the smoother paper a try and see how you like it. I even like doing pen drawings on smooth paper and then wiping the pastel on my finger and "coloring" in the design that way. Just some of my rambling thoughts :D

Thanks for the comment orchidlover6. Its done on Fabriano paper, its similar to canson mi-teintes. Used a hardish pastel to block in main colours and and then soft pastel over the top slowly building up the colour layers. Have learnt everything I know from this site and all in 3 weeks of self teaching myself. Without this great site I dont know what I would be painting right now.

Sure, especially the ArtAgain. The most recent things I did on it were the Larch Fir Cones for Jakeally in the pc 3 project, the Toucan in the same project and one of the orchids in Orchidlover's Philenopsis Project. Love black paper. But I use other colors too in the mi-teintes--my tinyhead lion is on an orange colored paper, and I often use green or grey for landscapes.

Absolutely beautiful Chris. Great job.

As for blending--here's my 2 pence (for dry pastels): Sometimes I blend like crazy, sometimes I don't blend at all. Most of the time, I do blend some. Just depends on the effect I want, the paper I use, etc. This one came out just gorgeous. Like I said Chris, you're a natural.

Yes, the paper does make a difference and mi-tientes is one of the most popular papers for pastelists, especially the smoother side.

However, (dare I say this to our Orchid?) the great majority of my cards in pc 3 were on 140lb cold pressed Strathmore blank postcard stock. This is where layering is sooooo important. No contest ,though, with mi-tientes, which is a much user-friendly surface. I think you're doing fabulously!!!!!!

Well yes it was a bit:D I did the flower entirely without blending and then I just could'nt resist going in with my finger and before I knew it I had blended all the petals:D So I had to start highlighting it all again. I found the background easier to leave alone. Its done on green sugar paper so that helped with the colouring.

This is wonderful, Slowdown. Bravo! I love the colors and the detail in the shutters. I also like the looseness of it, something I've not had much success with. I love it! Thank you. Right on my HD it goes to be printed out with the others I've been given. What kind and color paper did you use? Is it black?

Oh, and hey, aren't new ideas what WC is all about? I also am learning pastels the same way you are--on my own and with WC's help. Did my first pastel at the end of February 2002. Best art school in the country!

It was done on (get this, hehehe), lightly toned pink fabriano paper, I was curious as to how the colours would come out on it. I need to get a new scanner, there is detail that isnt captured on this post.

I often use a beigey-pink color in Strathmore. Especially if I want warmth but nothing too strong. I think the warmth from your paper may be contributing to the warmth of the pic. Good choice!

Sorry, Chris. I guess I got so excited about response to my first project. How could I forget your beautiful landscape, which I know was your first and then the gorgeous swan. My deepest apologies........:( :)

I'm so glad you're getting a lot out of this project. So am I. (And I was sooooo nervous about starting a project.) :)

Chris, you can buy hard pastel pencils (Stabilo is a brand I especially like, but I use Derwent too) and NuPastels one at a time if you just want to try out colors. The pencils run about $1 US and the NuPastels about the same. You can also buy Sennelier and Rembrandt soft pastels individually. That's a good way to find out which ones you'd like to try more of. Seems to me, Sennelier runs about $3 US for a full-size stick. The brands vary in hardness, texture, ease of application, etc. And I like some colors better in some brands over the same color in other brands.

If fact It's being difficult for me, I'm trying now to do some cards with the correct size and I find it so different to inks or watercolours, pastels are difficult to control. But I keep painting and I'll post some soon.

Im glad you like them KarenU. They are a mixture of all the above, except for the plein aire technique. I have started carrying a sketch book with me and I sketch things that catch my eye, then I incorporate them into the "paintings". I would like to try something plein aire but I am little intimidated by the thought, and being in Malta there are people everywhere and that sort of puts me off trying, I feel very uncomfortable having people watching me draw and paint, it distracts me a little, I keep thinking about what might be going through there minds, (what in gods name does he think he is painting!!).

My feelings too slowdown...I haven't done much plein aire either, I'm intimidated as well...but I too carry a sketchbook with me just about everywhere I go :D I find a really great benefit in keeping sketchbooks, both from the perspective of future paintings, but it also helps me gauge my progress as time rolls on.

Thanks so much Chris! This is one I had sooooo much trouble with I thought I'd have to trash it. But pastels are so forgiving. A little scraping off here and there and painting over seems to have worked.

"Mixing" colors in oil pastels seems easier to me than with dry pastels. Especially the softer, buttery ones like Sennelier. (Of course the two are entirely different animals.) They can be manipulated not unlike oil paints. I use my colour shapers a lot with the oil pastels. I'm still so new to them that I'm discovering a lot with each painting. Sometimes I'm not entirely sure yet how I got an effect. :D

I am going to attempt to scan one here at work BUT it's not a flat bedscanner and I don't know what it will do with the pastels.
If it doesn't work y'all will have to wait until we run a new one down.

btw - do you spray your work with a fixative? I tried Kyrlon's workable fixative on one and it made the pastels almost disappear. Very disheartening to see that happen

Wow...really sorry to hear about your computer problems!!! Hope you get everything resolved soon.

As for fixative....I have a can of Krylon Workable Fixative and I rarely use it because I don't like what it does to the colors of the pastels. Even with a lite mist it seems to effect them. The only time I really use it is in my sketchbooks where you have to do something to the pastels, otherwise they turn to mud pretty quickly :D.

I have heard....maybe from Eileen??....that there is a brand of fixative by Sennelier that does not effect the color of pastels and also doesn't smell nearly as nasty as the Krylon stuff does!

I just wrap my pastels in glassine and store them flat until I can get them matted and behind glass for protection.

Orchid, I'm sorry about your monitor. How frustrating to do three pieces and not be able to post them. But I'm sure the cards you've done will be worth the wait.

I've never used fixative, except on the cards I mailed out. And then veeeery lightly. Yes, it does affect the colors--makes the darker ones darker, and the lighter ones kinda disappear. So after applying the fixative, I went over highlights and other areas I felt needed it, thumped the back firmly to release dust and left them as is. They seem to have all arrived in very good condition.

Some artists use fixative in alternate layers with the pastels to add "tooth" once a ground has been saturated. I hear that works very well if you want to achieve a whole lot of layers. Then the final layer is usually left unfixed. I haven't felt the need to try that technique yet, but it's in my mental file.

okay more questions for y'all..

1. what type of pastels are you using to get such incredible details?
2. Are they hunks of pastels? or pencils?
3. How many colors do you have in your set? I only have 12 in my set.
4. Is there anything else I need to know about pastels before I start ranting and raving? :D

Mornin' Karen. It's beautiful here. What's it like in San Jose?

Yes, I did post about the Sennelier. It's a pump spray and costs about $18 US for 8.4 fl.oz! It does smell, but not nearly as much as Blair or Krylon. And it affects the colors but not nearly as much as the others. It's the one grab for when I'm ready to send a postcard in the mail. Otherwise, I don't use fixative on my dry pastels, and of course, don't need any on the oil pastels.

....

It's an absolutely beautiful sunny not a cloud in the sky kind of day!! Supposed to be warm....in the mid to high 80's.....just right! :D

I thought you had told me about the fixative from Sennelier :) I definitely want to give that a try...can't stand the other brand!

Got some new pastels over the weekend....they are the softest things I've ever laid my hands on!! Boy, you really need a light touch when using them! The first couple of paintings I tried with them......well.....needless to say, I won't be posting them here :D

1. what type of pastels are you using to get such incredible details?
2. Are they hunks of pastels? or pencils?
3. How many colors do you have in your set? I only have 12 in my set.
4. Is there anything else I need to know about pastels before I start ranting and raving? :D

Mornin' Orchid. Of course everyone works differently, but generally, you start with the hard pastels. Myself, I start with pencils. I really like Stabilo and Derwent. You should be able to find pencils sold singly for about a buck apiece. After the initial sketch, I do my underpainting with NuPastel sticks. These are shaped similar to Conte crayons and the square shape and corners are great for detail. They can also be sharpened with a knife to a very good point (I prefer to break mine). They are still a hard pastel but are softer than the pencils. After all that, I do the bulk of my painting with Rembrandt, which is a soft pastel but really falls into the medium soft class. After each layer, I renew/refresh my details as necessary with pencils and/or NuPastels. My final layers will be in the very soft pastels. I use Sennelier and Schmincke. But on some pieces I never use the very soft pastels. Depends on the effect I'm going for.

Now for numbers: (Hang on to your hat)

Pencils:a 60 set of Stabilo Carb-Othello plus singles.
a 25 set of Derwents plus singles
a 25 set of Cretacolor (which I hate--too hard)
Sticks: a 40 set of Nupastels plus singles
a 60 set of Rembrandt
a 30 half-stick set of Grumbacher (reasonable and just a little softer than the Rembrandts, and an angular shape, good for details.
a 40 set of Sennelier
a 60 set of Schmincke

Now don't go crazy. I KNOW I'm going to be working primarily in pastels. They just "clicked" with me when I picked up my first one in February. But still, I started out very small. It can run into money so I wouldn't go investing a lot unless you know you're going to use them.

12 is really very little, IMHO. You might want to get a few more colors. What brand are you using now? Probably 25 is a good starter number. And I know you like to do realistic work requiring detail so definitely get some pencils. Just a dozen or so (even less) would be enough. Add at least a few NuPastels or something comparable to that. And then try some individual colors in the soft pastels and that should do you for awhile. BTW you're doing some beautiful work with only the 12 colors. Add as you feel the need. It's very individual. But for you, dahling--definitely get a few pencils. My faves are Stabilos and they're easy to find.

(Adding a P.S.) Whew! That'll teach ya'. Ask me what time it is and I'll tell you how to make a watch. :D

Hi mmdm:

I prefer to scan mine, it just seems easier to me, but use what you have available. Looking forward to seeing your work.

very cheap ones I bought at Wal-Mart probably 3 years ago. I can't even tell you if they are hard, soft or just plain defective!!! When I used the watercolor paper, I would have told you they were hard, but then when i switched to the mi-tientes they responded differently and I began to think they were soft. I do not feel so bad now that most of you use pencils for the detailing. I can't say I will invest much in pastels. If I buy many more art supplies in the near future my husband may flip. You wouldn't believe my art closet. Closet being used loosely here. It takes up most of our laundry room and then I have stuff stored in the guest closet and downstairs in some built in cabinets.

:D
i'm going to dickblick. be back in a while.... :D  :D

Ok, here is my list. (begginers list)
1 and 3 . I have 12 Derwent pastels, these are not soft but they are not that hard either. And I have 30 Rembrandt pastels, these are my pride and joy, I really love them.
2. The Derwents are like long pieces of rectangular pastels, and the Rembrandts are chunky pieces. Full sticks. I havnt used pencil pastels yet, bank ballance doesnt allow for it yet.
4. PATIENCE, you need alot of it!!!

along with money I don't have an overabundance of either :D

just visited dickblick and cheapjoes. I am in shock!!! I found one set for $450 buckeroos! but what a deal cause they'll throw in free shipping!!! of couse there were cheaper sets but still they cost a whole lot more than colored pencils and I thought they were pricey.

I think I will visit my local dealer and see what a cheap starter set costs. I saw a set of 24 or 36 there my last visit.

Dolors, this is extraordinary! The eyes are soooo real, as are the teeth--ready to bite. I love how you used the colors in this and the rougher side of the Mi-Tientes seems to accentuate the ferociousness of this lion.

Looks finished to me! I really like it.
Thank you Eileen and Karen for commenting my lion. Eileen, Am I using the correct side of the paper? I supposed I had to use the rough side, do you use the same side? I like it anyway.

Either side is correct, Dolors. Most pastelists do prefer the smoother side, however, but many use the rougher side to get certain special effects. I really like how your lion turned out on that texture. Next time though, try using the smoother side (it still has very good tooth) and see what you think.

I think you're doing great!

And Dolors, I just saw that you recently won an Alternative/Other Media Merit Badge. CONGRATULATIONS!
