Fabulous! You have really been on the ball lately! What brand of pencils do you use? I bought a very small set of cretacolor to sign my name with and stuff but they are so hard that they take the soft pastel off the paper. Is that usual or is it this brand?

Melissa, Cretacolor are the hardest of the ones I've tried. They even break when I'm sharpening them. Stabilo is a very good brand, and you can usually buy them individually for about a buck apiece. Derwent is another good brand. Cretacolor is VERY good for graphite and a few other things, so my first pastel pencils were a set of theirs. I was sooooo disappointed. However, they can be useful for your first sketching and underpainting. For detail, they pretty much stink if you want to put them over soft pastels.

Birdie, go to the project and at the lower left in the description there should be a menu. The top bar will say "Register for this project." Just click that. Then you'll be able to upload. Your pix have to be jpg and must not be over 500 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall. Sometimes the uploader gets temperamental, so I usually size mine at 490 x 590. That usually gets them in without a problem. Once the pic is uploaded, go back to the project and click on "Browse progress pics" or "Browse final gallery" There's a comment line by each thumbnail which will take you to the "post reply" page. When you submit your msg it will show up in the thread in the pastels forum. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Birdie
06-29-2002, 11:12 PM
I should have waited....I ended up starting a new thread so I didn't get it in here were it belongs....I size my work at 450x450 for my web page so most every thing will be that size...
Am I starting a project file to hold these in or is that not nessasary? I will re-read the post and try again later. Sorry for being a pain...
Birdie:rolleyes:

Ahaaaaa...I thought I had seen this before Eileen....and of course I had cause I got Paul Hardy's book too......don't you think his trees are terrific as well as his skies.

Thanks for your lovely comments Karen, Chris, Dolors and Melissa.
Yes, Chris, I think his book is quite good. Not really my style but this was fun to do and an excellent technique for this type of painting, where detail isn't required. After doing Sandra's demo, I thought I'd do some more demos following the techniques of other artists. Hardy works VERY differently from me, though. I'm much more detail-oriented. I will say, though, I prefer the dry sandpaper to the more expensive Colorfix. However, I'm limited there to the small sizes offered in hardware stores. I'm going to look around and see what other techniques there are to explore. I learn something from each pic I do. Isn't picture-making fun? :D

If you need a big sheet, you can get a 22" x 28" sheet of 500 grit Ersta for $8 here - http://www.dakotapastels.com/paper_ersta.shtml
I have some scraps of the 400 grit and really like it. I did the portrait of Amanda for the Portrait of Women project on this paper.

You bet it is!!!!...I haven't tried sandpaper yet cause I only have a few pastels to work with and I almost used up some of my colours when I tried the Wet and dry paper... Yes I am saving up for more colours....LOL.
I do like the way Hardy does his sky's though....such an impact on the horizon.....and it works with nearly every colour combination.....Glad you enjoyed the experience....and your picture was stunning:D

And very successfully too Eileen. I love the colours you used. What was the yellow bye the way...it is stunning.
I looked at your posting and thought wow this is terrific....and then I looked again and could see Hardy's influence imediately.
I love the way you were able to put your own stamp on the painting......that to me says ARTIST....not like me... I am only a leisure painter yet.....artist in waiting:D :D

I looked at your posting and thought wow this is terrific....and then I looked again and could see Hardy's influence imediately.
I love the way you were able to put your own stamp on the painting......that to me says ARTIST....not like me... I am only a leisure painter yet.....artist in waiting:D :D
Thanks so much for the lovely comments, Chris. But you're way off the mark about yourself, IMO. Get outta town with this "I am only a leisure painter yet" stuff. Your work is wonderful. Get over it and start calling yourself an artist. :D
BTW, have you tried his method of blending "with the heel of your hand"? Never thought of that way of doing it. It works fantastically, at least on the sandpaper. Of course it's only good for larger areas. I tell you, I always pick up some valuable things when I try out these demos. Are you going to try the tree?

Yes I did try the blending with my hand....great fun and you don't need much pastel on the paper to blend really well.
I have had a go at a tree...see TeAnnes card....That one was about the 4th attempt :D I am going to try again though

boy did i goof!!!!
when i scanned in my last lighthouse i used the same name as the first lighthouse i did.
well guess what????
when i did that it changed all the previous posts for the first lighthouse to show the image of the last lighthouse!!!!!
I'm about ready to give the first lighthouse to a friend and fortunately still had it in my possession to rescan. sheesh!!!! so it will look like i added another one, but really it's the old one. and if you are confused just imagine what i felt like when i saw i had two final entries that looked the same
so now anyone reading all of these pages of posts will wonder why everyone commented twice on the same image.
We can always tell them it's because I'm such a fantastic artist everyone was dazzled by my talent and they just couldn't help themselves..
okay stop groaning I can hear y'all clear over here!!!!!

You know that this could pass as 'Outback' Australia?
We have 'Ulluru' aka Ayres Rock and a lot of artistis paint it RED. Cos it is a bright orange in what we call 'The Red Center' of Oz.
Very nice girl. Some photos here (http://www.geocities.com/spiritual_ulluru/)

Thank you for your comments on my boat and on this one. My husband told me this last one was awful so I hesitated, but I liked so I posted. They are not twins, one is older than the other girl but it's difficult with the pastels to do details or to erase and I couldn't change them.

I knew it... :(
I didn't see it coming.
So sweet, so tempting.....
Each day that I pasteled away I could feel it happening.
Slowly, bit by bit my will bending to theirs.
First it was the Colored Pencil Temptress with her array of 122 different colors and still lifes that entrapped me for hours on end.
Then came the Pastel Temptress.
Oh she was so subtle, so smooth and inviting.
Calling my name
D'vorah, Deborah, Abeja, Nehlia... come to my project and be my slave.
So very slowly she wound her web of oil pastels around my mind until all I could think about was sticking my fingers in the oilly rich medium and concocting images that would not leave my dreams.
Then today I awakened from my pastel induced euphoria.
I picked up graphite sticks, surrounded myself with charcoal and putty, chamois cloths and sketching pads.
But at first my hands would not do what they loved. The forgot the thrill of turning a blank page into a dimension eutopia of contradicting images. They balked at the black and white images that lay so bland before me.
It was then I heard the call again in my mind
D'vorah, Deborah, Abeja, Nehlia... come to my project and be my slave.
But I resisted. YES! Yes?!?!?! I knew who was calling my name Who was blinding me in her mask of deception. :D
I stood there with sticks in hand. One up raised and declared "I SHALL RETURN TO THE FORUM OF MY YOUTH!!!! I shall go where I find strength and beauty! I shall break this temptation of color and smearing and go back to the Drawing Forum where instead of oil I will cover my hands and face with charcoal and be free forever more!
and so.... It has been fun but I must go back to the land of black and white, and several shades of gray and white.... and once again dapple in the medium that brought me to Wetcanvas to begin with.
MAY CHARCOAL RULE!!!!
of course I will pop in now and then and comment on all of your deceptively sensual array of colorful pastels. And of course you can always come and play in my playground for a while. :D
cya around the boards.....
and of course from time to time I will give into the temptation but If I dont go back to charcoal soon I will be tempted to rob a bank or break into Eileen's house to get me 255 Holbeins!

So I admit it.....I fell off the little postcard bandwagon!! As the long description on my entry states....I just had this burning desire to pull out my big ol pad of newsprint and take pastel to paper. I wanted to get messy and wave my arms around instead of leaning over a table and squinting at my little marks on the postcard.
So here it is for all of you.....enjoy! That one was so much fun, think I'll go do another! :D

HEHE, not quite. I did a charcoal drawing of it, and had people stopping and looking, so I kept the pastels away from view, I felt really put off by having eyes watching me. Maybe next time when I have more confidence I will try it.

Yes, I have been reading about having watercolour underpaintings and then using pastels to finnish the painting, so I am going to have a go at that. I used an acrylic wash in my last landscape, the rocks by the river and I liked the effect I got from it, but I only have 3 tubes of acrylic paint so I guess I will have to end up buying some more.

Ahhhh....but if you have the primaries along with some white and black (in acrylic that is) you can mix an astounding amount of colors just from those.
I came across a REALLY good book recently called: Color Mixing Bible by Ian Sidaway. The cover says....All you'll ever need to know about mixing pigments in oil, acrylic, watercolor, soft pastel, ink and pencil. I would HIGHLY recommend the book! :D The ISBN for the book is 0-8230-0723-5

Thanks Melissa! Actually on the two houses that I posted...I sketched out the main structures in willow stick charcoal.....then I did the colored pastel work, then I went back in at the end and used black conte crayon and black pastel to outline.

This is lovely, Slowdown. Your architectural paintings are wonderful.

Another lovely landscape, Slowdown. It's been so wonderful having you in the project. You've done beautiful work. You'll be missed, but I do understand "moving on." It's how we grow as artists. Do stop in for a visit now and again. Don't forget you're now an official member of PACO International! :D (Chris is founder and president.) I have one more thing to say. But I'll do it in the next post.

I'm baa-aack! :D You've done beautiful paintings in this project, Slowdown, but this one is my favorite. I go back and look at it often. I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to this one. I love the blue of the bird and I also love the crop. I've even been tempted to ask for the real life card. Do you mind if I copy this one to my hard drive (maybe I need Te's permission, because you gave it to her) and make a print of it on pastel paper?
