Alicia, I am simply blown away by your art. I spent a long time at your website thoroughly looking at everything and you are amazing!!! I wish I was wealthy enough to buy one of your pieces. I am sitting here with tears because they are so beautiful - you really captured the essence of these people. I have never tried a portrait and I don't have any confidence in my ability to paint them, but you inspire me to want to try!

Thank you for sharing with us Alicia. It is amazing how you put pastel to paper and make it come to life. I can't wait to see more.

Looking great Alicia, it's fascinating to watch your approach. I had a go at this photo myself some time ago as a practice piece but lost direction about halfway through. I much prefer your interpretation already and I'm looking forward to seeing this progress. Like the others posting here I also admire your style enormously. Thank you for sharing this with us

Amazing work, Alicia. Thanks so much for doing this as a WIP. It is fascinating to see how you gradually bring the flesh tones to life over the dark strokes in the beginning.

Alicia,

I have seen a demo by Harley Brown (not in person drats!) where he just conjures a face out of his background and whoa! I never thought I'd see anyone come close - but wow! I think you've outdone the Master! I just love your site.

 Thanks so much everyone. Your comments are more than appreciated..They are truly received with graciousness... Binkie, as of right now i only give semi-private lessons at my studio...once in a while..but so far i really like helping in this kind of forum...Tracy...this could be a paint along for you...just copy what you see.....THIS PAINTING IS DONE ON SUEDE MATBOARD USING NU-PASTEL SO FAR...I HAVE STARTED A LITTLE WITH SOME SCHMIENKE'S IN THE BEARD AND BACKGROUND..AS I GET MORE INTO THE BACK GROUND AND THE BEARD I WILL BE USING MOSTLY SCHMIENKE...AND TODAY I WILL BE MAINLY DEFINING AND PUTTING IN HARD EDGES WHERE I WANT TO EMPHASIZE AREAS AND KEEP THE EYE IN THE CENTER OF INTEREST...EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN THE PERIPHERAL VISION..IT IS SOFTENED......

The size is 11x15..I ran into several problems..the beard was becoming overwhelming..so i toned it down...if i would have shown more of the clothes i don't think the beard would have looked so massive...i thnk if i would have made the head a little smaller i would have had room for more at the bottom which would have made for a better composition...I added more reds ..orangy reds and pinky reds..{ i don't name colors...just what they look like} in the cheeks and the nose.. to bring those areas forward...and emphasized a few whiskers and on the hat around the face...i added the blue/green color in the background to add some excitement to the painting...i guess to make it pop you could say....punched up my values .....and when i was starting to overwork one of the eyes i called it quits.......
