The thread title says it. I have a box of ancient craypas that are still good. Are these a form of oil pastel? will they work in the same way say with solvents and blenders?

Yes, these are a form of oil pastels, but student grade. They contain much more wax than the professional brands and therefore are much harder to blend. The solvents can be used with them, though I never have. When I tought school this was the brand of OPs that I used. Some good results can be achieved, but the pro brands will spoil you forever.
Give them a go and see what happens.

Thanks Pat. I rcall I bought them when they first came on the market. I didn't like them then as they produced a kind of crayola look, but I've wanted to try op without making another supply commitment, so I'll play with these.

TJ, you might want to experiment with some different papers. The textured ones like Canson are hard to work with as far as layering and blending. Maybe a slightly smoother surface. Good luck and have fun.
