Hello _ I started a painting today of a winter scene I photographed last season. This is on gatorboard.

After painting the surface a rose color I applied Golden pastel ground for tooth. Here is the initial sketch using a dark nu-pastel. You can see the brushstrokes from the underpainting --I call them energy strokes. They will work into the painting later.

here is my setup--I paint on an old interior door as it allows for vey large pieces. the painting on the right is one I did a while ago I will refer to it for color and values changes.

In this stage I have applied watercolor to the painting- This is very loose and free. This helps me further define the light and dark areas.

Here I have started to apply pastel --mosty Mount Vision and Nu-pastel

Here is the last series of steps--I will leave it alone now and check in tomorrow --I am trying to keep it simple but there is a lot of detail

more detailing--I will work on more tomorrow--I want to push the hill a little farther back-I don't have enough value change from the middle tone to the lighter values in the distance so I need to figure that out ..

Thanks Tom, it's nice to see how you work. I remember your last winter scene and I think you also had a rosy undertone.

I adore your work Tom, so beautiful!! I really appreciate the way you did those trees and captured the snarled tangled web of bare branches.

Tom,

I lost your energy strokes??? I'm sure if I were looking at this IRL they would be obvious. Do they help lead me into the painting?...excuse me, I still see them. I think they are adding details to the background and added depth???
I love the hazy misty feel, I get the feeling there is a home down the road with a fire blazing in the hearth.

Thanks so much for this WIP!

BTW, Congratulations again on winning fourth in the PJ Pastel 100! An honor well deserved!
