this is an old fibreglass helmet i picket up for £2 ,i have preped it
2k primed it and now its guide coated ready for sanding it will be a display only thing for my new shop ,its a cheap simpson bandit lookalike
i will totaly refurb with new lineings and trim and straps the visor will have to be mopped as i doubt i will be able to get a new one the helmet being a 1985 model by MAX CASCHI of Italy model driver alien 2
i have yet to download the sanding and primeing photos as they are on my phone

the first image is of the guide coat being dried infront of a desktop infra red lamp these little babies are ideal for artwork and far better than the old hairdrier method i picked this one up at a supermarket for £5.99 it includes a good quality phillips 150 watt bulb

update on the wip

this is the flating process or sanding ,the guide coat as most bodworkers will know shows all the flaws and also tells you when the sanding is completly done this is a good tip for preping any surface including getting perfect results on gesso
i hope these are in the right order ?

make sure you get into all the nooks and cranies as this is where delamination problems usualy occure

plenty of soapy water i used 600 for the initial sanding then a lighter sanding useing 800 grit paper

you can leave it at 600 if no metalics or pearls are being used

well its ready for the background colour and then the actual fun bit the artwork

it's looking very nice so far, can't wait to see more. When you say "the guide coat" is that primer coat?

PS - I see bucket of crayons, is that what you use? lol

jumpforjoy61
11-07-2007, 03:45 PM
hi tiggi a guide coat is a light coat of a contrasting colour to your primer usualy black is used over light coloured primers

what happens is "as you will tell from the images" the sanding is made easier and all the faults in you prep are shown as the black will remain on any unsanded areas or in any pit holes ,these pit holes can be filled with stopper then sanded flat

this is why i always refer to sanding as flatting the idea being to atain a perfectly flat faultless surface to paint onto

this also has the benefit of showing you when the sanding is complete thus avoiding breaking through and having to reprime

its common practice in the automotive refinishing trade

the crayons are Lydia,s my four year old daughter as she doese a bit of artwork as well:lol:

part three of the wip sorry its in the wrong order just read from the bottom up

anyway it was spirit wiped then tackied to remove any dust after that it was painted black then lightly scotched with 3M copper ultra fine to remove and imperfections like dog hairs and dust as this was done at home not in the workshop so its all waterbased

the flames where done useing bottles and any old round object as a shield

some transparant blue was put over the white and then more white was used to highlight the flames again these are about half done and arent intended to be real or true flame just stylized and graphic looking

Hi Paul,

I liked how it all has progressed so far. Esp. the colours of your stylized flames. I prefer using transparent colours in flames, as well.

Nice how to, thank you for sharing...
