View Full Version : First WIP - Candy Apple - FINAL
11-01-2007, 02:04 PM
Well, after the Dianna Ponting class I am inspired again.
This is my first WIP post here on WC so I am a little nervous about it. Still a long way to go on this one so things will change. Working on it all day today so I will try to post more progress as time goes by.
Some of the photos are darker than others. Sorry about that.
This one is going to be hard as I have no pastel pencils yet. Grrr. :)

You have made an excellent start, the background looks fantastic and the apple looks smooth and shiny already.
11-01-2007, 03:42 PM
Great start! Keep posting you progress. I suspect that this will be something special.

I will be watching with great interest. Lucky you to have a workshop with Dianna Ponting. I wonder if she ever comes up to northern BC? I saw your other painting you did at the workshop and it looked fantastic. I am this one will be too.

Looking gooood! Nice background and the apple looks shiny and delicious!
And it looks like great fun to do! Will be watching.....

The background is a great foil for the subject.
The toffee looks great! Love the light and reflection you've got.
Keep it up, and it'll be an excellent piece of work.

Ooh, this is looking great so far. I have wanted to try my hand at a candy apple, but now I can watch and learn as you progress on it. Thanks for sharing.

11-02-2007, 11:32 AM
That's a great reference photo, and I'm enjoying how this is coming along.
11-02-2007, 12:48 PM
It's looking great. I'll be watching it.
11-02-2007, 12:50 PM
I'm really enjoying this. It looks like you have captured the sky and clods in the reflection on top.
11-02-2007, 04:39 PM
wow this is so cool..... so exacting..... i would be coloring all over it....no patience for me....
11-02-2007, 05:30 PM
Oh my, it is incredible what you do with pastels! This is great! And such a tasty subject. Only thing I'd suggest is that you darken the stick as it gets closer to the edge of the paper, just so it does not lead the eye right out of the picture.
I'm so thoroughly impressed with your painting high realism -- I mean, pastel sticks ought to be way too clumsy for anyone to be able to do what you're doing. Amazing.

Fantastic work Mrking. This looks yummy. it looks perfect
11-04-2007, 12:48 AM
I had a few minutes to get to the painting today and I got a little more done than I thought.
I do have a little issue with the RH side of the apple that I have to correct. Should be fun as the background colour was a unison that I borrowed from Dianna's box at the workshop and do not have anymore. :) hehe
The top part is going to take the longest as it has a lot of detail crammed into a small area. This is the time I need some pastel pencils to get me through it. Wish me luck. ;)

I have been following this from the start but haven't had the chance to post before to say well done. It's really looking amazing from here.

I have to say that the Ponting workshop changed everything for me what working with pastels. I have read over a dozen books on pastels (all have helped me) but there is nothing better than a good workshop to change everything.
Thanks for all your comments. I hope to have an update later today.

Phew, had a couple hours to really focus and here are the results. Right now I am about 98% complete. Have to finish off the stick and look for other areas to improve.

Well, all complete. Unless I fiddle with it before it gets framed. :)
I will be entering this into a exhibit on Thursday. Wish me luck on getting it accepted.
Took this photo with daylight bulbs and a digital SLR. Ended up choosing a bracketed shot that I underexposed. Ended up with a little more darks in it.
