I know I'm breaking a lot of rules on this one but I had to try it. Its Herring Bay where I lived aboard many years.

I masked off all the lights and the first wash is "Indanthrene Blue":D and Manganese Blue, both transparent and non staining.

Off to a great start, Carl! You've got cloud washes down pat. Um...are you seeing viridian in the sky (photo), or is it just my monitor? I see you've masked off the lights to the right. Figure you're adding the bits and bobs to each side of the harbor. I think that really adds to the composition. Will check back again. Looking good!

manganese is a heavy granulator......be careful...it does not like a lot of
playing..... so far so good......:)!!

Great start Carl. Have you masked the moon too? I think it needs to be a bit whiter. Awaiting another posting to see where you're going with this.

Thanks Fookie, Helene, Greg and Darla. There is some viridian in there. I'll add it. My frisket is orange and I did get the moon.:wink2: I'll try to post tomorrow.

Well, I always say...it's OK to break rules, as long as you know the rules you are breaking...'cause it's WAY more fun that way!! I've always wanted to paint a night scene...but have been cowardly. Looking forward to seeing how you handle this...might inspire some adventuresomeness in me!

Rules are made to be broken--think I've heard that said more than once in my lifetime! Go for it, and have fun.

Carl,
I love night paintings (haven't tried one yet, just like looking at them) and your reference photo is gorgeous.

Glad to see your Indanthrene Blue arrived and you are already putting it to good use. I like what you've done so far. Looking forward to seeing it develop.

Did I mention you seem to have clouds down to a T in your paintings.

Thanks Tracy, Judi, Stacey, and Sylvia! Keeps me fired up. 1 or 2 more washes I think and the sky and water will be finished.

Thanks everyone! You encourage me so much. This will be the last glaze I think before wet into dry painting. I'm only using Ind Blue and viridian right now and will add some crimson and sienna for shore colors and highlights.

I tried to make some indoor color corections.

Carl,
It is beautiful just as it is and very evocative of a moonlit night at sea, but when I look at your reference photo, it seems as if the sea is slightly darker than the sky. Perhaps one more wash over the water to add that little bit of deeper blue?????? What do you think?????

I just love WIPs - the first picture almost always looks so clumsy - then, like magic, the whole thing resolves into a picture. I think this is gorgeous, but I also really liked your second picture, where everything looked hazy and impressionistic - I was surprised when stage 3 came back to reality... Lovely, thanks for this.

Ooh...I really like it! I agree with Sylvia, though, that it would behoove you to do...well, something to differential sky from sea. How about a few streaks of color in the sky, and viridian and/or purple? I see a touch of both in the photo, albeit very pale. I wouldn't be surprised if you just opted for rubbing a little color out here and there. Less is more, an' all that.
Interested to see what you decide to do.

Thanks JJ, Sylvia, Nancy and Helena! I will do something to the water and add some color to the sky I think.
