View Full Version : WDE Oct 12- slot canyon

I haven't painted in a while, nor even lurked much except for a glance at the wde each week---somehow, life has been happening a lot lately!
But I couldn't resist the slot canyon--I'd love to see one! And I had a few kid-free hours. So, here is my effort. You can tell I was tiring and losing my light, the upper right corner is weak and I don't like it, but overall I am pleased with the effect.

Soft pastels, 8x12 inch Wallis paper, about 2 1/2 hours (sorry no progress picture--didn't have the camera with at the picnic table where I ended up painting!)

You're color choices and strokes are brilliant. You really have the light flooding through. It's fluid and beautiful. It's really a stellar scene!

Oh, I like it. The broken color really gives texture to the rocks. Good job.

Thank you all VERY much for you r kind comments--the problem with getting waylaid by urchins is that it is difficult to get back here to acknowledge you individually!!

I enjoyed working on this--it appeals to my love for geology, and I was trying to channel a little Van Gogh doing it. I hope to finish the upper corner this week, and may even try a larger version some time soon. I know some people had trouble figuring out how to approach the reference--it is certainly very different from your standard landscape or a portrait! I tend to approach most subjects in terms of lights, darks, and angles, and that worked very well for me here.

Thanks again for looking!!! And always, critiques and suggestions are welcome!
