This treatment of the malamute is a bit of a departure for me - essentially no blending (except for his tongue). I'm not sure I like the effect of the background showing through the oil pastel strokes, but it was a fun experiment. Caran d'Ache, Holbein Artist, and Sennelier oil pastels on blue colourfix paper, 6" X 7" About 2 hours. Thanks for the great photos, EP. Jane

Jane this is super. Your technique of letting the bg show through the strokes makes him look extra fluffy. Great contrast of the unblended fur with the blended tongue :) Can't you imagine burying your toes into his fur when your feet are cold?

After seeing yours, should I show mine?(we have the same crop too)
This is wonderful, the blue paper showing means reflections from the sky on the furs as Islander (Tami) said.
The tongue is very nice too.

Oh I have to say is WOW
I LOVE the effect of the background peeking through, gives the painting a richer and more harmonious feel, really makes you think of cold, snow and working dogs!!!!!!!!

I agree with all of the above. It IS super, and I think the background color showing though really helps the texture on this one.

The colorfix showing through does give his fun a lot of texture!!! You couldn't pick up an op and do a bad job!!!! I love your malamute!!

Very realistic.. I think I can hear him panting!

I especially like the way the background shows through the fur.. it seems to bring everything together.

He has such a soft, furry feel I want to pet him!

That is what you are supposed to do - use the color of the paper to contribute to the drawing. My head knows this but my hands compulsively cover every bit of paper. He has that aloof air of a dog who knows he is in charge.

Very furry, and the smooth tongue is a nice contrast.
