If you're not familiar with The Pastel Journal, allow me to share its story with you. The bi-monthly publication is the only art magazine devoted solely to pastels. As the editor, I'm looking to publish articles that feature the best work of the best artists working in pastel, as well as insights into artists’ working methods that will deliver inspiration and instruction for both the professional artist and the passionate amateur.

The magazine was first published in 1999, the result of the enthusiasm and energies of two pastel artists—Maggie Price and Janie Hutchinson. Frustrated by the lack of material published for pastelists at that time, the two decided to launch their own magazine! The success of the venture, however, made it rather difficult to do much painting, so the artists sold the publication to F+W in 2003 where it joined a happy fine art family that includes The Artist's Magazine, Watercolor Magic and North Light Books.

Maggie has continued to contribute to the magazine as a regular columnist. Other regular contributors include pastel artists Margot Schulzke, Deborah Secor, Richard McKinley—just to name a few. Recent features have profiled some amazing talents—Albert Handell (October 2007), Claudio Bravo (June 2007), Sigmund Abeles (February 2007), and Wolf Kahn (December 2006), but we also like to feature work by newer artists with careers that may be considered "on the rise." An annual competition, the Pastel 100, introduces the art of scores of artists every year in the April issue.
