The Matisse museum in Nice ...its nice (cheap pun, huh?) ... but to be honest, I've seen more and better Matisses here in America. .
In Baltimore, my home town, we have the Cone Collection with dozens of great Matisses, which Etta and Claribel bought in Paris directly from Matisse when he was still being discovered. Incidentally, they were old friends with Gertrude Stein, another Baltimore girl, and would buy art by Matisse and Picasso among others, often on the advice of Ms Stein, while visiting her there in the Montparnasse area, on Rue de Fleurus (I have a picture of that somewhere too).
The other picture above is a poster depicting a work in progress by Matisse, which I really loved because it shows his process, from drawing to painting. The subject is his wife, whom he painted repeatedly.
Nice and the other areas of the Cote d'Azur were throbbing with traffic when we visited in July. We camped nearby in Antibes for two nights and used that town as our base to explore the region. The Picasso museum in Antibes, where Pablo lived for about a year, is now the Musee Picasso. Its also worth a visit, just to see where and how he lived, in that seaside castle owned by the Grimaldis and offered up gratis to Picasso to live there as long as he liked
