View Full Version : A sunny day in the Big Smoke...a x-post

Hi All - I took the train to Brisbane yesterday with my painting kit to try my hand at an urban scene. I found a nice shady spot at the Botanical Gardens and set up with a view across the river looking towards the Story Bridge - a lovely morning with lots of curious passers-by. I called it quits at lunchtime and did a bit of tweaking at home this morning - critique welcome!

No question about the sunshine...love the dappling and the peaking through to the scene. Very inviting view.

Thanks Jane - it was a lovely day with a hint of haze
Hi Margaret - I get jealous every day. It's ok if it makes me try harder!
Thanks Lulu - I was sitting under a very large tree which gave a glorious spread of deep shade
Thanks dreamz - no experts here - only us chickens!
Thanks Celeste - that's a Brisbane spring day for you - bright and warm!

I love this one. The bridges are wonderful. I used to live in Lousiana, it makes me home sick to see such a lovely painting as this. Jan

Amazing depth and detail...you couldn't have done this all outside...or did you? I love the foreground branch and the bridge in the distance.

David this outstanding. The work on the bridge, the play of light across the water and inbetween those lovely tree shadows.

David this is absolutely fantastic. A masterpiece! Well done.

Hi Jan - the Story bridge is a single structure with two high points and a big dip in the middle. I'm sure I would like to see Louisiana!
Hi Linda - I would say about 90% was done onsite - I added the figures and tightened up the contrasts and details when was back home. The foreground branches were the last things I put in when I was there - I thinned them out a little to get some more of the opposite bank showing.
Thanks Ann - the bridge was a bit tricky, and the water seemed a bit bland for a while, but then a breeze sprang up and made some variations on the surface, which helped
Thanks Sue - I am embarassed now!

Excellent painting, with depth, light, shadows and a city in the far, far away background, with water. Wonderful. And spring, when here in NE, tomorrow is the first official day of fall. I love we are in opposite sides of the world: Spring and Fall.
Have run out of compliments, but not out of admiration for a painting well done.

Thanks Paulafv - we don't get so much of the pretty fall (autumn) colours in Australia - I'm sure it would be good to see!
