View Full Version : reflections and lemons

I am still in love with the still life. This time I decided to try lemons. I set this one up outdoors and I was excited to see a touch of blue sky reflected in the stainless steel bowl.
This is an 11 X 14 painting on La Carte card. I used Nupastels to begin filling in the sanded surface and finished up with my Terry Ludwigs. Before I framed this I wanted to pass this by the other soft pastel addicts for comments and suggestions.

It is a well accomplished painting. What is it that goes to make such a beautiful painting. Is it the paper, the pastels or the style of painting. Will any pastel on any paper give the same result ?

wow- what a super painting- looks so hard too....wonderful job on all of it

Thank you all for checking in and for your kind comments. Actually, Linda, this came together in 2 days. It just happens that way. Sometimes you struggle for weeks. At other times a painting comes together so quickly, it's like a book you have finished too soon and never wanted to end.
Charles, I think that sanded paper works well. It holds a lot of pastel. The trick is to use a harder pastel (NuPastel) to begin, then use a softer pastel (Rembrandt, Terry Ludwig, Grumbacher) to build up layers. You can use Sennelier or another very soft pastel to finish. Like frosting or icing a cake!
This is really just spectacular! Congrats on another fabulous painting!

This turned out fantastic. The lemons look like I could touch them.

I'm not particularly into still lifes, but this is excellent. I think it is amzing how you have managed to get the shine of the stainless steele bowl. The blue sky really sets it off. That isn't a Terry Ludwig red is it?, it looks very familiar. I love how his pastels just melt onto the paper.
WELL DONE

Carolynn, you have a good eye! Yes, that is actually a mixture of one of his many reds and a swipe or two of his orange/red. Aren't his pastels just the best??? Until I picked up some of his reds and orange/reds at the IAPS convention, I had never found the perfect reds. Of course, those are his yellows in the lemons.
