View Full Version : Turning Japanese

One of the Japanese Anemone's I photographed last week. I feel like I've broken all the rules of composition here but I like it :D
Watercolour on Fabriano Artistico extra white CP 140lb, 13 x 10 inches.
Comments and critiques always welcome :)

I like it too, in fact I really like it. The lower petals lead my eye right to the center of the flower with all the detail... just so beautiful. I just love your watercolors :)
Edited to say, I love your title. My kids (teenagers) have been playing that song on Guitar Hero lately. lol

Fabulous. I like how you have focused on one flower. Lovely work.

Don't know the song (showing age) but love the painting and am a fan of all your flower ones. :)

Oh my, this is fantastic. The blurry background is just incredible.

LOL Deb, I've got the song going around my head since I decided to use it as a title! Thank you :)
Thanks Carol, I loved the shape of this particular flower and wanted it to be the star :)
Margaret, I think the song was from the late 70's. Thank you so much :D
Wow thanks Celeste, I love combining fairly detailed flowers with soft focus backgrounds, the difficult part is making the two work together.
Thank you Gay :D
I see my photo is a bit dark, taken in poor light and not corrected enough as I had no light to compare! lol Here is a better image

LOL that song used to be one of my Sisters favorite songs. And it's on the new 80's Game for the Guitar Hero....and it's hard to play...really fast
It does look better in the most recent photo. :)

Love that area of sharp focus and the way it gradually blurs, very nicely done!

Ruth, this is just scrumptious looking! i love how you just hinted at the other flowers in the bg. great movement in this, too.

Rules were meant to be broken :D This is lovely, really like the soft pinks and how the background ties in with the flower yet it still stands out.

This is indeed an enchanted water color. I love your wet in wet back ground.

Ruth, it is beautiful! The detail is fantastic. I like that you repeated colors in the background but think they could be toned down just a tiny bit so we can focus on those fantastic stamens.

Everyone has already said it! Gorgeous!

I like the change of focus back to front Ruth - and the centre of the flower really grabs me!
Very nice ... and the comp is fine - I've used it myself!!!!!
It really is a plesure to look at!

Thanks everyone! I do like this one alot :D
Laura, the stamens were done very quickly, I certainly didn't spend more than 30 mins on them! lol
Life might be about to return to (kind of) normal, so I should be back to painting very soon.

I really enjoyed viewing this Ruth. I like the places where you left the white of the paper. Also love those soft edges in the rear petals. As for the center, it is simply fantastic.
