This one went through lots of changes and nearly didn't see completion. It's 14 x 14" square stretched canvas and based on a photo of an exquisite Peony by flickr photographer Denis Collette. Thanks Denis! I hope you like it.

Peonies are just heavenly...probably one of my all time favorite flowers. The only thing is those crazy ants that always accompany them. Oh but it's worth it!

My mother raised Peonies, and she said it took ants eating the buds open for them to bloom. I am not sure if this is true, but as a child I did. Yours is wonderful. I love the colors. It looks so much like the ones my mother grew. Jan

I love the rich texture and colors, Celeste! The petals look soft to the touch.

I once grew peonies, not easy, they are a bit temperamental.

Thanks everyone. I love Peonies too. I only wish they bloomed longer, oh, but they're sweet while they last!

First of all let me say that I have tried to paint one of these flowers and tossed it half way through so I can admire anyone who can pull these off.
But (ya, here comes the but) I do think that the composition of this is very central. I think if three of the edges were wraped around the canvas and there was more background it would make this really pop. The center of the flower is just too "bullseye" for me.

I agree about the central focus Audrey, not my favorite composition. In fact, this is probably one of the only ones I've ever done. It was quite an experiment that almost didn't get finished, but I'm content with it now and may take up the challenge another time with a different comp.

Nice job. That's a complicated flower to tackle.

Those Peony ants are the ones with good taste. This is a beautiful flower.

All those petals, Celeste. You are one patient lady. It is very beautiful with the delicate pinks against that maroony red.

The virtues of tenacity and perserverance at work. Nicely done IMHO.

Peonies are a personal fav and I buy them for the house and studio when they are on the market.

I have also heard they require ants to bloom but have no proof of it.

Thanks everyone. I've heard the same thing about the ants. One thing I appreciate about the plant is they keep coming back, quite hardy.

Yes, that's the thing I'm proudest about this painting is I didn't give up even though I was ready to fairly quickly.
