In viewing Redon's rather mystical work, it appears to me that he may have been revolting somewhat against the tyranny of reality...using symbolism to replace a world he disliked, although he still uses reallistic imagery, the mood is that of the unconscious taking control of reality..Maybe?

Yeah, patron saint of the symbolists.
Freud would have had fun with him!

Having studied this artist and others like him, Freud could have learned something. He used dreams as his source for creativity and was admired greatly by his peers, the Impressionists. He opened his soul and laid it bare onto the canvas so that others might get a small glimpse into his truth of the universe. To lightly dismiss or suggest any artist is off-kilter or unbalanced is indeed presumptuous. After all, art is a personal vision, and because someone else's doesn't match yours, only means, it doesn't.

That's not what was going on here... no one here is like that.

Since I started this thread, I'll put in another 2 cents. Feather is right about Redon. He was painting from a mystical dream point of view or other universal reality. He was not unhappy, quite the opposite, and to suggest Freud was even qualified to deal with his genius is what is up for debate. That is probably where that POV came from.

I see; looks like I misunderstood.

oh...I wasn't even suggesting that he wasn't great I happen to love redon ..and most of the symbolists of which he was one of the first ..at least of his time. Symbolism is one of my favorite art movements. I do think Freud would have been fascinated by him and probably was, although Jung would probably have been the better choice...
Sorry that you thought my post was sacastic which was not intended!
