After searching out a poppy blossom that was more on the abstract side and then trying to "fit" it into a specific color scheme I came up with this. I wanted to try to keep a lighter background but as I keep looking at this I keep wanting to darken the background. I can't seen to get away from my preference for very dark negative space on my florals. I also need to do some more work on the leaves I think.

This is really beautiful Gayle! The light and the edges are fantastic. I know what you mean about dark backgrounds I am the same way.

Gayle, your poppy is stunning! i know you didn't ask for any C&C but i have one suggestion. i tend to use dark backgrounds as well and i know it gets old after awhile. i like the lighter bg on this but next time you might consider choosing a color from the flower/foliage to make it more cohesive. just a thought........

Stunning!
Like the crop, like the colours, like the painting!
The bk'gd doesn't worry me at all - but you could try Billie's suggestion re: colour there - and do it in your paint prog first to see what you think:D

I think you're storming with these macro florals!

Ok I got lots of good comments from you and the acrylic forum. I played around in my paint program and decided to change the background. That enable me to add those little hairs on the leaves that I loved in the reference photo.
See what you think now. I'm much happier! The background isn't all that dark but I like the color change.

I liked the tanish background, and I think I might have left it. But WOW I really like the change so much! I also like the little hair details too :)

Thanks Deb - I tried several colors in paint before deciding this worked best.

 That poppy's so bright, I gotta wear shades! he he
Really, though, the new background really transformed this poppy into the flamboyant showstopper that poppies are supposed to be. Like little flamenco dancers on stems!
And this painting is a showstopper.

Thanks Snueart - you should see it IRL - it's 24" X 30" and pretty shocking when you round a corner and see it on a wall!
