My three days to work on it are going to be offset a week. So when ya'll have the chat, I will be looky-looing. I think, time-wise, getting ready for my meeting has priority, unfortunately.

But I am looking forward to this painting.

I initally scanned in images i wanted to use and composed my composition in adobe photoshop to get everything basically laid out. then i did an initial sketch on watercolor with charcoal pencil. i'm struggling with whether to do this in watercolor or charcoal. the title is 'pink flamingos' but the nature of the subject matter tilts toward a darker side so i think i'll forego color and do it in charcoal. keep you fingers crossed. i've had this image in my mind for months now. got permission from the person who wrote the prose to use it here and now here i go.....

the composition is about 11 x 14 inches on strathmore 140# coldpress paper. Now i have done the flamingo and wedding ring using vines soft and hard charcoal and a bit of General's charcoal pencil #2b. i need to be careful i don't get charcoal dust everywhere while working. now let me remember advice from everyone.... what did they say? mask, frisket, planning is everything? all of the above? go slow orchid. go slow...

taking a break to upload these wips and make comments as i go along. plus give my back a rest for a while...

I've worked some more on the flamingo, ring and now i'm defining the balloon, motel sign and part of the background. I'm laying a tissue down over the areas i'm not working on so that i don't smear charcoal all over the place instead of using the liquid frisket. still working mainly in vines charcoal except for the lettering and around the flamingo sign. this may not take me as long as i originally thought it would. i'm up to around 4 -5 hours at this point.

finished the balloon, background around it and now blocking in the hair. here comes the scary part - doing a whole face!!!!

BTW - THE FACE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. one of wc's more prolific posters graciously gave me permission to use her image in this composition, however it has been altered to effect the emotion i am trying to portray in this piece.

had 3 more wips posted but here is the final piece and prose that goes with this.

FLIGHT OF THE FLAMINGO

She saw them on one of those nature shows.
Before that only at the zoo, flocked together,
each standing on one leg. But on the television,
Lannie watched them fly.
Gracefully, like not even trying.
Pink and coral in color.
Flamingos, pink Flamingos.
She had never seen anything more beautiful.

Lannie told her husband, Raymond,
that for her birthday she wanted pink Flamingos,
the plastic kind you can put in a garden of flowers.
Her birthday came.
No pink Flamingos; no flowers.
Nothing.
Nothing.

One time she told him she wanted to go up
in a hot air balloon over Albuquerque at sunset.
In the cool air of autumn, she wanted him to hold
her in his arms from behind. It had to be from behind.
Tight. Warm. Secure.
She explained it all in great yet simple detail.
She even used new words she had read in a book
and had looked up their meanings.
“Quintessential moment,” she had said,
and “splendorous vista.”
It all rolled out so spontaneously, it even surprised her.
When she finished sharing, she trembled and smiled
and pulled her t-shirt up to soak away tears.
But Raymond, he didn’t say a word,
just looked like a blank wall.
He walked to the fridge, opened it and stared.

So Lannie got up in the morning,
made coffee and toast as usual,
stood by the back window looking to her little
garden of flowers where she imagined pink Flamingos.
Went to work at the factory
where they make plastic parts for washing machines.
At night, she worked in the kitchen,
rubbed rough hands across her tired face,
shuffled slowly to the bedroom past Raymond
asleep in his chair, the remote under his thigh.

One evening Raymond found a note on the kitchen table.
It read, Your supper is in the oven. I will be home later.
Raymond went to the fridge, leaned against the door
with wet palms. His eyes trailed downward
across pictures of family, colorful magnets,
and pink reminder notes.

Just beyond sunset Lannie lay naked
in the thin sheets at the Flamingo Motel.
A man from the factory slept behind her,
his body odor in the air.

A neon lit Flamingo spread wings of light
and flew through the closed blinds of the window,
blinking pink glow upon her.
A lone tear glistened and fell quietly from her cheek
as she imagined the splendorous vista
of Albuquerque from a hot air balloon.

In front of the fridge Raymond stared at the floor.
He shifted his weight to one leg and wondered
how he could explain to Lannie
that he was afraid
of heights.

This is an original poem used with permission of the writer ;)

that moment at the pier

because love strikes like lightning
who can say there was enough time to say the words
seeing and not realizing
what my soul could want
i flirted with your knowledge
never expecting to share anything but the moment
and now away from the past
i can barely believe the words leaving your lips
it is clear as my smile widens
too much for one without coffee
that somewhere in you, was myself
saying they like this
knowing what preferences i've kept hidden
being too close to see it as i do
i became pygmalion's work
and all of this is beyond me
why it should happen when i had given up hope
and even now that my reflection
could ever be anything to you but nice or okay
somehow i'd like to open your eyes
just as mind have been released
and in this same avalanche
my lips would like to save your lips
my embrace to resuscitate your skin
in that same closeness
that we never allow ourselves at first goodbyes
and so
it being too late
i could do nothing but make myself follow
and watch you board the ferry
all the while wanting to shout song titles
despite the looks of strangers
it is a fool's prerogative to be heard
to step back and be blocked by the sun
so that my neck could tilt upward in locked position
as you sat there looking down from the railing
without any clues to this sickened historian
trying to pierce your beautiful eyes with some knowing
that no one
should stare at you this long
unless their heart was lost...

Yep, I'm a closet haiku composer from waaaaay back--since my teen years. Spent some time in Japan, studied the language, art and literature. Still write haiku. To me, a good haiku paints a picture in your mind. So I tried to paint the picture in pastels as well. Hope it worked.

There's a third one on the way, but it's more complicated. It'll take a bit more time than the first two.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment!:D

John's Garden

Farmer John wandered back
And when he reached the pumpkin patch, began to speak.
He said, "The weather's getting colder
Summer's over and it's almost Halloween.
That's the day, the reason you were raised,
When everything about your life will change

You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness.
But remember that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart."

The pumpkins help a meeting then;
Some were very apprehensive and afraid.
"Could this really happen to us?
What could be the meaning?" is what they were saying.
"This is home, it's all we've ever known."
Then one bold, outspoken pumpkin spoke.

He said,
"I don't need eyes to see, it sounds like a lie to me.
I like it just fine here in John's garden,
And remember that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart."

There is much to ask and to ponder in the pumpkin patch
When imposing old October shows up at last.

Then a pumpkin from the farther end
Who had been silent up till then
Over the commotion, said,
"What would you rather have my friends,
A chance to shine, or die here on the vine?
The better way seems very plain to me.

You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness,
And maybe that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart.
Oh, but one goblin's smile should make it all well worth while
You know you might even see the starlight,
And knowing that time is brief, makes it that much more sweet
When you have a jack-o-lantern's heart."

-Peter Mayer

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/image_viewer.php?entry_id=11142 Don't really know how to link this but here's the song that inspired this painting. When I first heard of this project this song popped into my mind. Guess because it was so close to my anniversary. June 1st I will be married 34 years and this song was our song at our wedding. So kind of an important song to me.

You'll Never Walk Alone

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high

And don't be afraid of the dark.

At the end of a storm is a golden sky

And the sweet silver song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind,

Walk on through the rain,

Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart

And you'll never walk alone,

You'll never, ever walk alone.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart

And you'll never walk alone,

You'll never, ever walk alone.

All done, finally :)
Catwalk (or slip n slide)

House inspection tomorrow,
to see if I am keeping it clean.
Need to have all spic 'n' span
not a speck of dust to be seen.

Just washed the wooden floors
The cats are in their feral mode.
Slipping and sliding. Paw prints
everywhere, in my abode.

Insky wobbles his bum
his plan is to attack…
As vinni-van slides by
He looks like a 'Flat Cat'.

Trying to get a foothold
Insky's back legs give way
Head first into the fridge.
Ah, it's me cats at play.

Jumping to cupboard cause
vinni-van hates wet paws
Inskys' pawing the water.
Then shaking them on the floors.

Here's the third of my triptych. I'm pretty unhappy with it--my skills are not even close to being up to my vision. Oh well..........

This is beautiful Luvy- so romantic - and happy anniversary.

I was performing in the show Carosel- that this song comes from when my Mother-in-law passed away- so it always brings tears to my eyes.

Isn't it lovely to have someone to walk with:)

I've got to say, I absolutely love your selection of prose here.

Such vivid colours are used in the passage, and yet your choice of charcoal is just perfect to contrast her despair against the hope of her dreams. You've portrayed Lannie's total unhappiness perfectly.

Lovely job.

couple of quick sketches in metallic pastel from a kids musical I wrote a few years ago called Dreamchasers. The siver shows up white on the scan and gold shows yello- oh well.
This first one is from a song at beginning of show (sung as duet)where the 2 young children prepare to search the solar system in search of their father. The little boy ( who at the time was played by my youngest son- then 5 1/2 asks his sister what his father is like, and sis tells him..

The kindest man I ever knew,
(boy) tell me again tell me do
He was the one who could turn the light on in my eyes,
and in my heart I know the meaning of love
(boy) can I know it too?)

I long to see him again
(boy) can't wait to meet him
feel the touch of his hand
(boy) when can I see him
but I'm dreaming again
(boy) keep me dreaming
Only dreaming

(boy) Is he strong is he tall - I want to know all
(girl) his smile was the touch of a rainbow in the sky
And when he held his hand in mine I thought I could fly
But I'm dreamin again- only dreaming

boy( will he know me too? tell me what will he do?
(girl) he will prickle his cheek against your cheek and tousle you hair
He might tickle your tummy then joyfully toss you high in the air
And at night he will quietly sing you a lullaby
Then kiss you goodnight and squeeze your hand so you won't be scared - Then you'll know what it means to be loved by your dad

I long to see him again ( can't wait to meet him)
feel the touch of his hand ( when can I see him)
And he's not far away ( how far away?)
Just a dream away ( maybe one more day?)
He's just a star away ( just a star away) tonight.

From end of same show- when having gone through trials and adventures etc.. have nearly reached destination and daddy hehe.

Chorus:
Cruising in on a moonbeam
Sailing home on a prayer
Don't get all downhearted- you're nearly there
Cruising in on a moonbeam
Sailing home on a prayer
So long since you started
You're finally here

No need to search for sunlight
No need to cry in the rain
Don't hunt for silver linings
Just let a moonbeam take you away

Chorus:---

Hope is just the first step
On the journey to happiness found
Don't search for rainbow's ending
Just catch a moonbeam and you're homeward bound

Chorus

Thanks so much, Kitaye. This was the first of the three, and it's my favorite too. I think maybe I spent most of my "passion" on this first painting. Although a triptych was the idea from the beginning because of the three haiku. But I began to run out of steam during the second painting, and definitely am not happy with the third. Might have something to do with the postcard project going on heavily right at the same time. :D I might do another interpretation of the third haiku later on.....
