This was started before I painted the white cosmos, but I was struggling and couldn't see it ever being anything but ugly so put it to one side. Decided to try to finish it today and I'm not thrilled, but it's not as ugly as it was!

10 x 13 inches, watercolours on Fabriano artistico extra white CP 140lb, mostly using quin. rose, perm. alizarin, napthol red for the clematis.

Comments and critiques welcome as always :)

Ruth, You may not be thrilled but I rather like it! I think with the right matt & frame it might be a stand out! The more I look at it the more I love it.

Oh this one grabs my attention! I love the detail in the center of this flower, the background color is just perfect, and the flowers are just really beautiful! Did I mention that I just love red :)

Hi Ruth, no way this is ugly i am afraid! I think it is fabulous. Look at how loose & fresh it is & see how the colours sing? It is a confident, vibrant, fresh & joyful painting so well done i say.

Perhaps what could have helped is to have mirrored some of the darker pinks or purples into the shadowy bg, bottom left in particular. Just a hint of this would have been enough to make the flower belong, without it being a conscious thing to your eye, also adding a bit of extra depth at the same time. It is really enchanting as it is, but keep that in mind for some other time as it really helps. Clap to you x

Wow Ruth - glorious, in-your-face colour! What could be better?
I like the contrast of soft areas and lost edges with the more defined areas.

Just love that glorious colour though!

Nothing at all ugly about it. It's beautiful and very well done. I'm never happy with anything I do either. I always feel like my paintings are just not good enough, but it makes me determined to work at getting better.
