View Full Version : White Cosmos (x-posted Watercolours)

I think I fiddled too much with this one, I liked it more before I added a final wash on the background!
Watercolours on Fabriano extra white 140lb, from my own reference, 12x10 inches.
Comments and critiques always welcome :)

No, I love the background... very rich, and really makes the cosmos pop! Absolutely lovely!! :)
As for a crit... I would darken the second cosmos a bit, to push it back some, especially at the edge of the large one's petal. It is catching and holding my eye in that spot. But that's me... :)
Gorgeous piece!

Thank you! I think you're right, the small cosmos flowers could do with graying out a bit more to push them back (something only obvious once it's on the screen!)

I completely agree with Angela. It's a beautiful painting, and I love the background. I would also darken the little flower next to the main one to push it behind the large one, and give the petals some separation. Overall it is certainly very effective.

That happens a lot with me! I finally bought me a reducing glass. :)
Still love the background! :D

Thank you Val!
Angela, if I was more patient and let a painting sit for an hour or two after "finishing", I might notice things before posting! lol I must look for a reducing glass if that will make me see!

Wow, stunning! I love the in your face attitude it has!

Thank you Mistiaggie, kmb :)
I have made a slight adjustment as suggested, but will be changing one more thing thanks to a critique in the w/c forum.
This is how it looks now:

I do like the way the flower captures the light - it radiates!
I think I'd be wanting to blend the hard colour a little more in that top petal Ruth - the horizontal line it creates is distracting - to me!
I do like the sweep of the composition - that's great!
I could see this as an even larger painting - WOW! :D

I like this. I am totally in awe of someone who can handle watercolour this well (you may remember my rather dismal attempts in my early days here - maybe not). Anyway the flower pops in the sunlight and the background is fluid and acts as a perfect foil against the petals.

Ditto Carols first sentence! I totally agree. People like you make it look so easy.

What can I say? It's just lovely!

I like before and after, but I can see that darkening the small flower beneath the subject does push it back a bit. I like the background really well.

I can feel the time of day, the season of the year, and can imagine a wonderul garden surrounding these blooms.
I can almost feel the sun on my neck.
Elegant and eloquent.

Thank you all! I've had a busy week, with a family funeral and prior to that I was quite poorly, but finally got a good photo of this as it stands.
Carol, I remember you, and I remember how sad my early attempts at watercolour were! Lesson - everyone can do it if they persevere ;)

Ruth, this is truly wonderful. You made a fabulous finish to an already lovely picture. I can imagine it matted and framed. Well done.

This one is exceptional! Don't see how I missed it.

A gorgeous painting which for me tells the story of how a flower attracts bees with it's welcoming petals. The cosmo relates to a big satellite dish sending and receiving signals to the insect world for the benefit of all flowers.
I love the colours of the flower and contrasting, subtle background and the flower has a wonderful 'pose.'

Beautiful! I like the small changes you've made also.

My first impression is WOW! then looked at the comments about second flower catching the eye... thats true. I like the update you did in the second picture. Awesome!
